The Dangers of Losing Compassion or Empathy It’s common for people to choose not to be benevolent or sensitive to other people’s feelings, but it carries a personal cost. People who try to suppress their feelings end up acting immoral. There are actually several other dangers to subduing feelings of compassion. It is dangerous to lose compassion or empathy for others because one can lose his/her sense of what’s right or wrong and can justify inhumane actions.
Some people think that losing compassion or empathy for others is the way the world works but, in fact, it’s dangerous to lose compassion because one can justify inhumane actions. In the short story “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” by Ursula Le Guin, the people justify the child being locked in a basement by saying even if the child is taken

In the short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury, the story takes place on Venus where the Sun is seen every 7 years. There’s a girl named Margot, who lived on Earth for a while before coming to Venus, so she remembers the Sun and it’s happiness. She realizes that she’s “different and [the other children] [know] her difference and [keep] away,” (Bradbury 2).
They lack compassion for Margot by avoiding her. Instead of trying to celebrate her differences, they lock her in a closet. They are “[hearing] her muffled cries. Then smiling, they turned and went out and back down the tunnel, just as the teacher arrives,” (3). They don’t comprehend what they did was unacceptable and harmful to Margot. They acted immorally towards Margot because they thought that it was fair that she doesn’t get to the see the Sun again since she already did once. Now, the other children evened out the playing field by acting horribly. People don’t realize what’s right or wrong when they lose compassion for others. In the short story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” by Ursula K. Le Guin, the author paints a picture that is ethically controversial. The story shows a small utopian society that is positioned near a glistening sea, it is called Omelas. At the beginning, the people are celebrating an annual event called the summer festival; at the festival, adults play games and there is horse riding for the children. At first glance, Omelas seems like the typical picturesque utopian city, however, underneath all the glamor lies the real truth. At the core of Omelas, a suffering child exists who has been locked in a cage and summoned to live in its own disease.…

I found your response very enjoyable. I agree with you in saying that Mary Bibb faced many biases due to her race and sex and support your statement in saying that “one’s identity should not restrict or deny them from any opportunities.” I thought it was important that you addressed the issue of separation and exclusion, as the society was disregarding her accomplishments and making her seem invaluable due to her skin tone, sex and gender. Black children were also excluded/denied access to common schools and Mary Bibb wanted to change this, making sure that children of any skin colour could receive an education. Even though schools now accept students of various cultures/backgrounds/races, I find that within the classroom and schools, judgement,…

The reason for this behavior is that the children's envy of Margot poisons their mind and makes them feel like Margot has something they do not have, which is seeing the sun, and they need to make it even and not let her see the sun; the children therefore exhibiting Hammurabi's "Eye for an eye" policy by locking her up. The children stuffing Margot in the closet displays the "State of War" nature in humans, for the jealousy in the children is making them feel like Margot is intentionally hurting them which makes them display an act of revenge by locking her in the closet, resulting in a "State of War". The children's behavior to Margot displays multiple acts of cruelty which buds from their jealousy towards her, showing us that society must change their views on new ideas and different types of people, and only then can we as humanity take a step to making our world…

When people experience troubling events, there is a chance they can repress them to forget what happened. We do not completely forget them but simply put the thought in the back of our minds, only to be remembered occasionally. In “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas”, by Ursula LeGuin, the people of Omelas know a child is locked in the basement by himself. They continue to believe his isolated suffering is the sole reason for their happiness, so they trap him there. Some citizens have trouble coping with this idea, and leave the town in an effort to set the child free. “They leave Omelas, they walk ahead into the darkness, and they do not come back”(LeGuin). Others live with this idea whether they agree with it or not in order to fulfill their…

Compassion is the understanding or empathy for the suffering of others. Compassion is often regarded as emotional in nature, and there is an aspect of compassion which regards a quantitative dimension, such that individual's compassion is often given a property of "depth," "vigor," or "passion." The etymology of "compassion" is Latin, meaning "co-suffering." More involved than simple empathy, compassion commonly gives rise to an active desire to alleviate another's suffering. It is often, though not inevitably, the key component in what manifests in the social context as altruism. In ethical terms, the various expressions down the ages of the so-called golden rule often embodied by implication the principle of compassion:…
