The Odysseus: A True Hero
When people think of a hero they think of a good looking, strapping man wearing tights and a cape with powers that will save you when you are in trouble. When it comes to Homer’s Odysseus in The Odyssey he has the looks but not the powers, tights or the cape. What makes him a hero is how well rounded he is. A great hero has to have three traits, they have to be strong, smart, and sensitive and Odysseus has all three.
First of all Odysseus has the most important trait needed to be a hero, strength. It took strength to drive a stake through the eye of the Cyclops Polyphemus. This blinded the giant, and allowed his men to escape. When Charybdis, the whirlpool monster, attacked his ship Odysseus was able to hold on to a fig tree and survive while

Odysseus relies on his mind more than he does his strength. He is smart enough to know that he cannot overpower Polyphemus when trapped in his cave so Odysseus uses his stupidity against him. Odysseus outwitted him by calling out "Nobody is my name. My father and mother call me Nobody, as do all the others who are my companions" (), Polyphemus takes the bait thus allowing Odysseus to blind him. Odysseus also uses his craftiness by disguising himself and creating a plan to end up with the suitors locked in a room with him so he can kill them one by one. If Odysseus wasn’t clever he would not have been able to accomplish all that he has.
Lastly, a characteristic that proves Odysseus is a great hero is his sensitivity. He is often moved to tears, while he is a prisoner on the island with Calypso, he yearned to be home with wife Penelope and son Telemachus. Missing them gives him so much pain that Calypso would often notice Odysseus, "...sitting in his usual place on the stone, wearing out his soul with lamentation and tears." (). He reserves this sensitivity for the people closest to him that he trusts the most. His sensitivity reveals that he is human and humans can be sad when they are away from their

Odysseus was no hero and his words and actions clearly show. Book 1 of the Odyssey starts with “Sing in the, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending”. Introducing Odysseus as “a man skilled in all ways of contending” shows Homer, author of the Odyssey clearly wanted Odysseus to be seen as a hero. After all, they were both Greek, and the Greeks held a lot of pride they needed to protect. This makes me believe that the story behind The Odyssey was twisted so that the reader was forced to see from the perspective the author wanted.…

One way that Odysseus uses his intelligence is to help his men. For instance, He puts beeswax in all of his crew's ears when passing the Sirens. The epic states "Going forward I carried wax along the line, and laid it thick on their ears” (Homer 706). This helps them get past the Sirens successfully. Also, his intelligence helps him handle difficult situations. Like when they are in the Land of the Lotus Eaters, he only sends out three of his men so that everybody wouldn't eat the flower. In his story, Odysseus says "Then I sent out two picked…

To start, Odysseus was developed with standard Greek heroic traits. First, Odysseus was courageous in the face of opposition, as shown by his encounter with Charybdis and Scylla. The protagonist of The Odyssey commanded his crew to row onwards in the face of the monsters, showing his courage. He was also intelligent, as he devised a plan to escape the wrath of Polyphemus. Odysseus made the Cyclops drunk with his liquor before blinding him and allowing his crew to escape on the underside of the sheep of the island. Finally, the main hero of the story was perseverant, as illustrated when he left Ogygia, battled Poseidon’s storms, and made it to King Alcinous’s island.…

His intelligence and strength allow him to get out of difficult situations, but his one flaw that was bringing Odysseus down was his hubris. The whole time Odysseus was trying to get home, he had many opportunities to display these traits, for example giving Polyphemus the wine to put him asleep showed his intelligence because this was the best way to injure the giant while causing the least amount of death. When he hung from the fig tree and waited for his ship, or being trapped in Polyphemus’s cave are all obstacles that he had to overcome. Odysseus overcame these obstacles because he is a hero and heroes overcome problems that come their way. Odysseus is not a superhero however, he is just a normal person that overcomes mistakes and problems that he is faced with. Everyone knows about superheroes and heroes and that they share similar principles except anyone can be a hero, but no one can be a…

The general populous has hailed Odysseus as the epitome of the epic hero for several centuries, but to the modern reader, he comes off as anything but. While he was extremely driven by one goal, getting back home to his family, he performed some not-so heroic deeds on his quest and once he arrived back in Ithaca. Odysseus had many affairs and was disloyal to his wife, slaughtered hundreds of people in the name of righteousness, and above all, exemplifies hubris, or arrogant pride. These traits and behaviors are not acceptable for anyone, especially a person considered to be and hailed as a hero. Odysseus is not the epitome of an epic hero.…
