The Oath Of The Horatii By Jacques-Louis David
The art piece called The Oath of the Horatii by Jacques-Louis David was an art piece made four years after the revolution of France. The painting is about a fight between two men with women on the side of it. It shows a complicated story but as an art piece, it is detailed very carefully. This art piece impacted those who saw it by sharing a story. It made people wonder and curious about the story behind it. When I saw this, I did not expect the story to be the way it is. The context of the painting was viewed both culturally and politically due to the reason why they were fighting and why people died. One of the women on the side got killed because “one should be guided by one's feelings of patriotism and not by personal feelings about family”.

    Notably, no person within the painting makes eye contact with the viewer. This creates a composition that mimics that of a play. This further adds to the sense of a single, dynamic moment in time. As I dive into analyzing the facial expressions within this piece Cato once again appears most prominent. His strong gaze solidifies the intentionality of his action and increases the sense that he is retaining his composure. The man behind him and to our right’s face exhibits a look of shock and fear. He looks as though he just witnessed the events leading up to this and still has not had the time to properly register what he has seen. It is hard to be certain but it seems the man reaching to help Cato’s eyes are actually locked unto Cato’s wound. This continues to reiterate that this is the exact moment after Cato struck himself because the man has not even had the chance to look up from Cato’s injury as he rushes to help. Personally, I find the most dramatic face to belong to the soldier directly in the center of the piece. As a soldier he would be expected to be the most hardened and unemotional man in the room, yet his appearance is one of great distress. He appears comparable to man forced to watch his brother die.     The visual imagery of David’s painting supports his call for a democratic republic of the people in France. When the viewer’s eye approaches the art work, it is drawn to the swords held by an aged father to his young and strong sons. Their arms extend in a Roman salute (another mark of Republican values) to the sword, and the angled stance of their bodies with firm and muscular limbs create a symmetry to stress the central importance of the oath. David also employs chiaroscuro, the opposition of light and dark, to create the illusion that the swords are supplying the light for the painting.     Observing the artwork you begin to clearly distinguish the content that Antoine-Jean Gros intended to reveal to the viewer as the subject matter. The subject matter from the content reveal the compassion by Napoleon as a leader to his sick subordinates. Images so powerful such as this one elevated the leader to most likely a hero status in his time, he gives his subordinates hope and faith with his presence alone. It also has elevated him to a godlike status with the light from the window directly behind him embracing him all around. Many times in personal experiences I have seen this scenario repeated during my military service. Always at that particular moment when morale is at its lowest it is followed by that perfectly timed visit from the Commanding Officer. In these such visits those welcome words of reassurance from him that all things will be alright and also that we are to succeed in our mission at hand. He would always take time to take questions from his soldiers and then personally talk to any member part of any heroic act or wounded during the conflict. The representation of Napoleon extending his arm to aid a sick soldier also adds courage to his actions. The courage that he is does not fear the sickness that has caused so much suffering to his soldiers. When looking further more at the art work you understand that not only displays of acts of courage and compassion but also of the suffering. The woman in the painting are attending the sick with their face partially covered as if they were afraid to breath the smell of disease in the building. One other aspect of the painting that grabs your eye sight is the soldier at the door, he seems to be trying to communicate to Napoleon. Antoine-Jean Gros brought many elements together to represent suffering, compassion, faith and hope. He clearly attempted to represent Napoleon in a manner that would benefit him in his future…
