BAHAY MAGILIW: THE MODERN FILIPINO FAMILY
Page 8-11

During the time that I come to realize what their role is in the family, is about the same time that I come to realize that the way of life highly differs from the traditional American ways. Their friends do not live as they do with so many people around them; their friends are not prohibited from being with others outside their own race; their cultural beliefs, traditions, superstitions – everything that the Filipino child had grown up with believing, is not the American norm. It is about this time that the child begins to prepare to leave this way of life behind.
Even with changing attitudes, the Filipino culture continues to thrive and the concept that family takes precedence above all else is still ingrained in the culture. Many offspring of native Filipinos eventually leave the nest; but, ultimately they return to their roots.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR FAMILY ?
Page 4-5

I must say my family had lot of attributes which made it easier to learn some of the valuable virtues one needs on a life journey. The things that would have made my family ideal would have been for my farther to show his emotions towards my mother and us. This would have helped me to be in touch with my own emotions more and would have helped my relationship with my loved one. It would have made me a happier and a healthier person. I hasten to add that my parents tried their best and I know they loved all of us and wanted the very best for us.
I feel immense gratitude and appreciation for the parents I had and the family that I have. They made it possible for me to work hard, have a career I love, have the family and friends who love me, have confidence and healthy self-esteem, have the ability to speak my mind, voice my thoughts and convictions, have conviction to tell the truth, have good intuition and I feel connected to higher power or universal consciousness. That’s not

Filipino's are not more family oriented than in other cultures, but what makes them Filipino's is they think they are. No offense. But many people have strong relations with their families. I lived in a home for six months and had to listen to my Brother in law tell me how family oriented they are as he yells at his father, and puts down his dead mother. I watched as just about every male member of the family had girlfriends, and the wives knew and ran those girls out of town when they got pregnant. I watched families that lived across the street visit each other once a year. I had a Filipino tell me that my daughter (half Filipino isn't Filipino enough to live in his house with my 2nd wife for a short time). So in any respect, I'm not say they are less family oriented, but that we all have our issues with getting along, and Filipinos are no more family oriented than other cultures.…

Filial piety, an important value in Confucianism, should also be practiced by Filipinos in their family because it can help mold our country for the better. It is said that the family molds a person. Hence in everything an individual does he or she reflects the other members of his or her family. It is believed so because it is in the family where one first learns to speak, to think, and to act. It is where one is first taught with life’s values, morals, and ethics. It is where one first experience to manage his or her emotions; like how and when to be happy or be unhappy. Through interviews and extensive research the authors explore the relationships between Filipino migrant women and their families. The authors state, “Specifically, we explore how migrant women and their family members define and negotiate family ideals, gender identities and family relationships, given the family’s transnational configuration. In other words, with women – regarded as the “light of the home” (ilaw ng tahanan) – away from the family, how is family constituted and family life crafted by its constituent members both at home and abroad?” (Asis, Huang, Yeoh 199).…
