The Meaning of Work
The meaning of work is just as different to people as the meaning of life. So many things are involved in what work really means. This includes morals and principles, personal work ethics, responsibility and the list goes on. When it comes to deciding the right combination one must remember to stay true to oneself in order to become honestly successful in the business world. Rationality is not an easy concept to understand. By definition rationality is the, “recognition of ends and mean” (Above the Bottom Line 3rd Edition, 2004, p. 211). Rationality begins with a capability to mirror and understand, weigh options and distinguish the absolute best way to accomplish things. What is meant by the ends and means in rationality? The, “ends” are the goals and the “means” are the choices. (Above the Bottom Line 3rd Edition, 2004, p. 214) Rationality also involves taking part in the best line of attack. It has been stated that, “rationality, in short, basically amounts to being good at the game” (Above the Bottom Line 3rd Edition, 2004, p. 215). One way to do this is by being efficient. Efficiency is to accomplish something, “in the most rational way” (Above the Bottom Line 3rd Edition, 2004, p. 217). Hopefully this efficiency will lead to high profits. Another part of rationality is the art of negotiating. This is defined as making ones wants clear, what one is willing accept and what one would really to do for it. “This discussion is called negotiation, and it is the key of rationality in business.” (Above the Bottom Line 3rd Edition, 2004, p. 227). Responsibility should be looked at, to start with, in terms of the encouraging roles and opportunities that define the professions we do and our place within the world. To be a participant in a practice is to have responsibilities, and to be a member of a society, by virtue of being a participant in certain practices, is to have social responsibilities as both an individual citizen and as a participant in those practices. Another form of responsibility is that of moral responsibility. This is a common word that is used in the business world today. These responsibilities are described as, “those duties and obligations that are based on the rules and expectations of morality” (Above the Bottom Line 3rd Edition, 2004, p. 246). With that said, different people have differing opinions of what morality is to them.
Legal Responsibility is completely dissimilar from social and moral responsibility. This, “requires a law or statue that can be broken and for which legal apparatus is available for indictment, conviction, and punishment” (Above the Bottom Line 3rd Edition, 2004, p. 247). It is essential for business owners to pay their employees and provide them with benefits. This benefits include sick time and health insurance. These benefits are reasons for many to work, and as they are trying to makes sure that their personal and families health care needs are met.
All forms of responsibilities of can be misunderstood. This could be a miscommunication on the part of business owners or employees. Mistakes can be made when it comes to this and one is, “namely, thinking of responsibility in business as external constraints on our activities” (Above the Bottom Line 3rd Edition, 2004, p. 255). However, responsibilities, “by their very nature, are intrinsic to roles and to participation in practices” (Above the Bottom Line 3rd Edition, 2004, p. 255). They are not forced upon us and one should be accepting of them as their defined roles within the corporation.
