Some historians argue that slavery was the primary cause of the American Civil War. As Robert E. Lee said, “In this enlightened age, there are few I believe, but what will acknowledge, that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil in any country. It is useless to expatiate on its disadvantages.” I believe the statement that slavery was the primary cause of the American Civil War is true, because slavery was very controversial and became the symbol of disunion.…

One of the most important causes of the civil war in my opinion would have to be the Nullification Crisis of 1832. It is often assumed that the civil war was based solely on the existance of slavery in the south. This assumption is generally made by people who are not fully educated on the topic, and are unable to fully understand each of the different factors that led to the civil war. While slavery did play an important role in the disunion of the north and south, the war itself was caused by disunion and disunion alone (Schweitzer, Jeff). The largest factors leading to the war composed of state's rights, followed by disagreement on tarriffs. The primary difference between the north and south was not the fact that the north wanted to abolish slavery, but more of the fact that the south was primarily agriculturally based around cotton. The north were industrialized and would typically manufacture the cotton (Foote, Shelby 26).…

If asked, most people would blame as the cause of the civil war the issue of slavery. This is understandable; many people in the U.S. at the time were against slavery, going to far as to help runaway slaves escape to the free north. But, while slavery at face value was a major factor, international politics and economics played a major role. Several factors, including the election of Lincoln, the raid on Harper 's Ferry, the Dred Scott decision, and, most importantly, the fugitive slave law, contributed to the growing rift between the North and South and, eventually, the Civil War.…

There is much debate whether slavery was the prominent cause of the Civil War. Contrary to popular belief, slavery was not the ultimate cause of the Civil War; in fact the economic, cultural, and political differences between the North and South played more prominent roles in the instigation of the Civil War and influenced the beginnings of slavery.…
