The Kansas-Nebraska Act Of 1854
Another issue in the Civil War that revolved around land was the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. This Bill was passed for great measure, not only did it solve many political unknowns, but it also solved many things for the future. The Kansas Nebraska Act was enacted for “Popular Sovereignty” which means people rule, or something chosen by the government reflected by the citizens. This not only was important in the land matter, but also has connections to states rights and also the 10th Amendment. The Act let the settlers choose rather they wanted their state to be slavery or non-slavery. This caused many conflicts between the north and the south, due to the uneven amount of states wanting to be able to have slaves or to not have slaves. Not only

    The Civil War was the greatest and most important war ever to be fought on American soil. Though the events leading to the civil war had been ongoing for some time, the Civil War was never inevitable; it was the result of prejudices and extremism and failures in leadership on the sides of both the North and the South. The Civil War was at first a war to bring back the secessionists back to the union but it later became a much greater event, a war to end slavery and a war forever remembered by the America peoples.     By this time, so many more Northerners had become opposed, morally, to slavery and had spoken out against. Many people were opposed to slavery because the white families had a very hard time competing against the inexpensive labor of the slaves and could not rise above to grasp what everyone wanted, the American dream. When the Kansas-Nebraska Act was put into place in the hopes that popular choice would make Kansas a slave state and Nebraska a free state which would maintain balance and would also organize even more territory coming in from the Louisiana Purchase in order to further the railroad construction. This conflict instigated dramatic change in addition to the change created by negating the Missouri Compromise Line. Because it repealed the Missouri Compromise in which slavery was not to expand north of the 36’30 line and also because many in Kansas were thoroughly against slavery, both morally, and for their financial well-being which led to the event known as Bleeding Kansas where bloodshed had become evident over the dispute, this change also involved the end of peaceful compromise. Those opposed to the spread of slavery like John Brown went to Kansas and killed pro-slavery Southerners.     The Kansas-Nebraska Act set the stage for what began “Bleeding Kansas” and ultimately the Civil War. As settlers began moving west of the Mississippi River, they moved into the area which is present-day Nebraska. Since the area was not yet a structured state, the people could not live there.
