The Interlopers And The Cask Of Amontillado
In the short story “The Interlopers” and “The Cask of Amontillado”, the rising action gives you a good mental picture of the mood. When the reader reads the line of text from “The Interlopers” that says, “All around them lay a thick-strewn wreckage of splintered branches and broken twigs.” you can picture in your mind the two men with broken branches and twigs lying around them. Also, in “The Cask of Amontillado”, one line from the rising action is “We passed by walls of piled bones, with casks and puncheons intermingling, into the inmost recess of the catacombs.” In this sentence, you get a good description of what the catacombs looked like.

“Hunters in the Snow” by Tobias Wolff starts out Tub waiting for his friends to pick him up. The suspense starts with rising action by his friends being over an hour late. I chose “Hunters in the Snow to be the more suspense than “The Cask of the Amontillado.” Hunters keeps the reader on edge by displaying three different personalities. Confrontation due to human nature. The reader may question whether they are going to show up at all. This is an example of rising action. When Frank and Kenny show up they most run over Tub. Frank and Kenny both team up against Tub. The friends are going hunting together and with the two against the other one it builds suspense of what will happen in the woods. While hunting, Kenny lets out he has a secret with Frank, Tub wants to know what the secret is. Kenny is obnoxious and dangerous with the rifle. He shoots the pole for no reason other than hating it, then he shoots the dog, and then aims the gun at Tub. This is leading to climax of the story. The reader may wonder if Tub is going to die at this point in the story and his friends leave him there to be found, or is Tub going to defend himself and shoot Kenny. Could Frank and Tub leave wounded Kenny or bury him? This is another rising action in the climax. The three friends tell the owner of the land that the dog has been shot. This is another example of suspense will the owner kill them for killing the dog or will he let them go? Kenny hasn’t told his friends the owner had asked him to shoot the dog, is how…

In “The Cask of Amontillado”, Poe uses these two main literary devices to express important parts of the story without making it obvious. The simple symbolism gives the reader a clue to what each part the character will play in the short story. The foreshadowing gives the reader a vague sense of what may happen in the story’s future events. These two elements combine in “The Cask of Amontillado” to create a story that has a fascinating and creepy atmosphere that persuades the reader to continue reading to find out if his or her predictions are…

Homicidal maniacs, revenge, and self destructiveness consuming people and taking its victims. As many authors continue to express and many lives fulfill the concept, the fear and anger consume its victims until the make the ultimate choice. Revenge is an emotion which can become all consuming. Revenge takes over one's life until they are nothing but a ball fire, aiming for its next victim. Generally revenge tends to be irrational and silly, especiallyat such great lengths as murder. In the story, “The Utterly Perfect Murder”,( ) Doug, the protagonist awakes on his 48th birthday and thinks to himself, “I will arise and go kill Ralph Underhill.”( ) The irrationality of the situation is outstanding considering it is 36 years since…

In “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, the main character named Montresor is set out for revenge. Montresor’s only concern is to get revenge on the man who has wronged him named Fortuanto. Montresor never states why Fortunato deserves to be punished. The only statement Montresor makes is that Fortunato “causes him a thousand injuries” until “venturing upon insult.” (Poe, Online) Montresor plans to take out his revenge by burying Fortunato alive. Montresor carries out each detail while he smiles at his victim. Montresor doesn’t smile at the thought of Fortunato’s “immolation” but because of viciousness. (Sweet Jr. Online) Montresor smiles because he believes the sacrifice of Fortunato will bring him a great reward. Fortunato is ironically the “mirror self” of Montresor (Sweet Jr. Online). Montresor’s desire to bury Fortunato alive “paints the psychological portrait of repression” (Sweet Jr. Online). The burial of Fortunato represses Montresor’s evil nature and puts him at peace. In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Edgar Allan Poe uses irony to develop his theme of seeking salvation through repression.…

In Edgar Allen Poe's tale, the setting of Montresor's catacombs provides Montresor with a place where he can kill Fortunato with almost no evidence on who killed him, helping his attempt at making the perfect crime. The catacombs in "The Cask of Amontillado" are old with spider webs as well as "long walls of piled skeletons, with casks and puncheons intermingling, into the inmost recesses of the catacombs" (Poe 78). The setting of the catacombs is also dark; Montresor and Fortunato need torches to proceed through it. Such a creepy setting like the burial vaults of one's family provides the perfect place for Montresor commit his crime. Not only is the setting visually disturbing, but the atmosphere is also disturbing; there is the "intense foulness of the air [that] caused our flambeaux rather to glow in the flame" (Poe 78), as well as the dampness. Not many people would be interested in touring the catacombs because of such…
