This nation was found on the principle above all else; the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tells you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world, ‘No you move’” (Straczynski) This quote is a quote by the well known superhero, Captain America. The superhero representation of America wouldn’t give hope to people of every age if Marvel wasn’t created.

In 1939, the company Marvel was created by Martin Goodman.

Their Marvel branch was a hit. Goodman hired his wife's cousin, Stanley Lieber, now commonly known as Stan Lee. But, in the 1950’s superheroes were going out of style. Timely Publications dipped their hands into different genres to write comics about. Some of the genres include: horror, Westerns, humor, funny animal, men’s adventure-drama, giant monster, crime, war comics jungle, romance, espionage, medieval, Bible, and sports comics.

Goodman began to use his company's logo, the Atlas News Company, on comics so he could distribute them better. This made Timely Publications’ comics more commonly known as Atlas Comics instead of the usual Timely Publications. Atlas started to follow television trends and unsuccessfully tried to bring back the superheroes. Atlas rein over the comic book industry is because of how cheaply they priced the books.

At the same time, parents were complaining that comics were corroding their children's brains and making them more violent, and the Comic Code Authority, the CCA, was created. The CCA was created to restrict the content in comics. In 1954, a few comic book publishers came together to appease the audience by creating the Comics Magazine Association of America. Companies had to send their books to the association to try to get their stamp of approval that would tell that the comic was wholesome, entertaining, and

As a child, Alex enjoyed newspaper comics. He and his sister would trace the comics and add their own captions. Alex Pardee has always been drawn (no pun intended) to “different” art, whether it be old movies like The Dark Crystal and Star Wars, graffiti, skateboard art, or the likes of Strawberry Shortcake. The first twisted comic that captured his interest was The Maxx, created by Sam Keith. Before he found The Maxx, he never took a liking to comic books, thinking they were all superhero nonsense. This dark, untidy comic about the tragic happenings of a teenage girl changed his view of the comic industry as a whole and inspired his own twisted, powerful, unkempt style.…

The Red Scare caused a large dispute between the Un-American Activities Committee and Hollywood in the 1940’s. The Hollywood Ten, a group of writers and directors, were sent to jail, “for contempt of Congress after they refused to testify about their past associations.”(Henretta, pg.746) This very well known event in history was one I had known about, but was unsure of the exact details. I went in search of the events that lead up to arrest of the Hollywood Ten.…

The antithesis of Socratic justice is that The road agents possess no understanding of what constitutes good and have “made of the world a lie every word” (McCarthy 75). This lie is one they tell themselves to justify their actions and cloud their morality. When, for example, one of them attempted to lure the Man and the Boy back to his truck, he told them that he would feed them and that no harm would come of them (McCarthy 64). His real motivation, however, was to kill them and eat them. The road agent was attempting to fulfil his own desires for survival at the cost of the Man and the Boy’s life. Then, after the Man killed him, the other members of his party ate him with impunity. There was no happiness in this creature -neither during his…

From 1776 to present day, America has been ever changing and her people have been a different breed, no matter where their ancestors came from. America stands for the freedom of any U.S. citizen, and any American willing to share the ideas of the people have defined what America means and the character of her people. When September 11, 2001 came with such tragedy to America’s shores, everyone was trying to define what it meant to be American and what America stood for after the attack left the country, and her people, in complete shambles. By the time September 20, 2001 came around, Americans wanted answers and those answers were contained in the speech by their Commander and Chief. George W. Bush, who was President at the time, had gained plenty of criticism for how his speeches were delivered, but he knew that the country was at a very emotional point. Bush’s “Address to a Joint Session of Congress and the American People”, ties ethos and logos to strengthen his pathetic, or pathos, appeal in order to strengthen what America is and what her people stand for.…
