If one looks at the data, the bigger problem is that many students don’t finish college. “Only about 55 percent of students graduate six years after starting,” Bob Luebke (a writer for the Civitas Institute.) The problem is not access but completion. So why do people drop out of college? For the most part, money is not the biggest problem; it’s usually factors like family issues, or transportation. Providing free tuition to institutions that graduate only a small amount over 50 percent of their students does not make economic sense. Also, if college tuition does become free for students, colleges will attract more young people who are not suited for college and will most likely drop out as well as more students that will major in fields with little or no market…

Do you think the facility magically cleans itself, who do you think keeps the restrooms clean the floors vacuumed or mopped, etc.? The maintenance and custodial staff are an essential part of keeping a facility running properly, they work hard to keep the facility in working order. According to the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education records, in 2015 the budget for Seminole State College was $11,414,062 dollars; 17.8 percent of the budget (2,022,226) went to the cost of maintenance operations. However, a college degree should not be the new high school diploma. “More than one-third of students have to take remedial courses when they enter college, as they leave high school unprepared for university-level work. Free community college would put even less pressure on high schools to produce graduates who are prepared for college-level work, as they could expect the new free community colleges to fill in what the high schools are failing to do. The proposal is more likely to produce a six-year high school system than a two-year gratis workforce preparation experience” (Burke). Numerous people would take advantage of the “FREE” two year college courses, and community colleges would more than likely be bombarded with students looking for a free ride. There are already programs out there that help students with college tuition; there is no need to raise taxes even higher to pay for everyone to go to college free for two…
