The Great Gatsby
In the book “The Great Gatsby”, arguably the finest work of art by F. Scott Fitzgerald, none but a few people had the idealistic “American Dream.” To some characters, it seems that the American Dream has been replaced by just materialism and greed. What does the American Dream mean? What does it stand for? If a person has achieved their American Dream how should they go about living? The American Dream is the vision to be successful and to provide from our pocket to ourselves as well as our families, the best way we can. The characters such as Tom and Daisy Buchanhan, Jay Gatsby, and Myrtle Wilson have all misplaced the American Dream with greed and materialism. Tom has done it in many ways. He works for nothing and plays all day. Another thing he does which takes up much of his time is have an affair. Nevertheless, he has his wife, Daisy, sitting in his huge mansion alone with his daughter which he barely sees regularly. He has an affair with a woman named Myrtle Wilson. A woman who has no feeling for anybody but herself and cares about living the highlife rather than living her own life. She loves to see Tom shower her with gifts and take her as his number one priority. A great example could be when she said, “I want to get one of those dogs”(Fitzgerald 27); Tom hesitated at first but still paid for the dog. Jay Gatsby’s obsession with materialism and greed is somewhat different to others in the novel. Gatsby had and overwhelming love for Daisy, Tom’s wife. He felt so in love that his greediness of wealth overwhelmed his actions. He began buying everything to buy her love, all to impress his long lost love of five years. Daisy is a lightheaded, non-chalant woman. She too was obsessed with material items. Her life was based on money. As Nick Caraway, the narrator of the story (in the story) implied, “Her voice is full of money” (Fitzgerald 127). She herself wouldn’t marry the man she loved because he was poor. Some of the characters in the

Jay works hard to become rich because of the dream he has of being with a wealthy girl named Daisy. He knows that he can not be with her if he is poor, and the only way to drastically transform social classes is to commit acts that are not legal. While it is never confirmed in the novel, it is believed that Gatsby earns his money bootlegging during prohibition. This was a time when alcohol was illegal and people would pay more than normal to have this valuable drink. Gatsby is always on his house phone suggesting something devious is going on. “Only the very rich could afford single lines, a necessity for Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby, since they are both engaged in illicit affairs and cannot risk having neighbors eavesdrop on their conversations” (Coleman). Gatsby made sure that only he knew what was going on. While trying to get Daisy back, he never tells her how he made his fortune meaning it is not something he is proud of. What shows is that Gatsby is a “poor guy who would do anything to become rich” (Beuka). Fitzgerald portrays Gatsby as a magnificent self-made man, but we do have to take into the fact that he is a criminal and he did not earn his way to the upper class legitimately. Gatsby is in fact a sweet and well mannered man, but he purges his morals to achieve his dream in becoming…

He is known to most as Gatsby. Gatsby is living a very luxurious and lavish lifestyle. In the beginning of the book, we learn that Gatsby frequently hosts elite parties for all of the rich folk in the area. To an outsider, it seems as though Gatsby lives a very nice and desirable life. He has many reasons to be happy, but we soon learn that all of the money in the world can’t make him completely happy. Gatsby believes that he can win over the women in his life through money. Gatsby shows immoral behavior because he is striving to develop a relationship with a married woman. He is in love with her and is trying to win her over even though she is in love with her husband. The ways in which he tries to win her over also show some of Gatsby’s immoral behavior. It shows some of the materialism of this time because he is trying to make the girl, Daisy, fall in love with him by buying her nice things and showing off his own riches. This turns out poorly for Gatsby in the long run because she does not fall in love with him even though she is all that he truly wants. Infidelity and materialism are just two of the immoral behaviors that Gatsby portrays in this…

Tom describes him as being victim of a permanent anti-climax, the result of the echo of a forgotten football game long ago. Perhaps this is why he has decided to take on a mistress. His lover, Myrtle Wilson, is also in a state of discontent. She doesn't think much of her husband, George. "'I married him because I thought he was a gentleman,' she said finally. ‘I thought he knew something about breeding but he wasn't fit to lick my shoe'" (Fitzgerald 39). George Wilson may not be a very interesting guy; an auto mechanic doesn't offer much excitement. However, this does not make him disgraceful or poorly bred. After all, this criticism tells more about Myrtle's character than it tells about George's. It is not unfair to say that Myrtle is involved in her relationship with Tom for the sake of climbing the social ladder. On similar lines, their overstuffed apartment symbolizes their desire to stuff value without real structure or meaning. "Their apartment was on the top floor- a small living room, a small dining room, a small bedroom and a bath. The living room was crowded to the doors with a set of tapestried furniture entirely too large for it so that to move about was to stumble continually over scenes of ladies swinging in the gardens of Versailles" (Fitzgerald 33). This ostentatious display of overstuffed, and florid possession shows a desire within Myrtle to make public her new…

Green is the color of hope and it is viewed as one of the most important symbols in The Great Gatsby. Gatsby believed in the power of green light and its ability to provide him with everything that he desired. He felt that it could take away all his worries and create a prosperous life for him. Gatsby is characterized as being naïve since his dreams led him from rags to riches, and he was able to see a new developed America. Clearly, the green light represents far more than just a dock light. It represents the distinctive differences between the West and East Egg, the obsessive love Gatsby has for Daisy, and how Gatsby wants to live the ‘American Dream.’ The green light also consequently becomes the reason for Gatsby’s downfall at the end of the novel.…

For my book report project I chose to do a graffiti wall for the book The Great Gatsby. I made a brick wall out of red poster board and drawn on lines for the bricks. I chose five words that I thought related to the book and spray painted them onto the wall to create a graffiti look. The five words I chose are party, dream, love, eyes, and death. Here are the reasons why I chose each of these individual words:…

The american dream in my opinion is if you work hard you will achieve the goals that you have. The american dream is different for every one of us because we all have different goals. For example a goal for someone who goes to college might be to graduate from college. A goal for someone who lives in the street might be to find some food and find a place to stay. This shows that many people have different goals which means the american dream does not exist. In the story The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald the message about the american dream does not exist. In the novel it does not exist because wilson keeps on trying and trying to achieve his goal and he doesn't accomplish it.…

In chapter 3 of The Great Gatsby Nick is invited to one of Gatsby’s extravagant parties. He arrives only to find he doesn’t know where Gatsby is, and then he runs into Jordan Baker. Together they set off to find Gatsby and they head to the library where they find “Owl Eyes”, a drunken man trying to get sober. After talking to “Owl Eyes” for awhile they head outside again where Nick unknowingly starts a conversation with Gatsby. After revealing himself, Gatsby tells Jordan that he would like to speak to her privately. Later “Owl Eyes” drives his car into a ditch and the chapter ends with Nick describing his life in New York and driving in a car with Jordan. The quote that best describes Jordan Baker is, “Let’s get out…this is much too polite for me” (45). The bad qualities of Jordan Baker are she is deceitful, derisive, and contemptuous. Jordan’s good qualities are she is a strong and supportive woman. Fitzgerald developed Jordan Baker throughout The Great Gatsby because she is an example of how people prey on other people for money. In addition, Jordan Baker is important because she represents a new type of woman in her time.…

By the end of World War I, many America authors were ready to change their ways and views on writing. Authors were tired of tradition and limitations. One of these writers was F. Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald was a participant in the wild parties with bootleg liquor, but he was also a critic of this time. His book, The Great Gatsby is an excellent example of modernist literature, through its use of implied themes and fragmented storyline.…
