Symbol

Lowry uses symbol in The Giver to help transmit complex ideas with few words. In The Giver the symbols Lowry is conveying are the apple and the sled. When Jonas was playing catch with Asher,“Jonas had noticed...the apple had changed” (21-22). The apple is an emblem of change. Jonas is starting to be able to “see beyond.” When Jonas saw the apple’s adjustment he started to be able to distinguish the community’s true colors. When Jonas is living the memory of the sled and snow, he goes gravitates down the hill on a red sled, “He was free to enjoy the breathless glee that overwhelmed him…”(79). As he soars down the snow on the sled he has a provoking wake up call that he could have a chance at a more superior life. The sled descending down the hill is like moving on to a new life and realizing the community is not the boundary. The community knows nothing about colors, emotions, and memories. Although the community is deep in despair without even knowing, Jonas and the Giver are able to see what the world was like before. Together they make a plan to bring the community out of the mist. They give

For example, Lina and Doon discover,“ ‘The mayor has a secret treasure room in the storehouse’ ” (158). The mayor is sitting on his bottom watching the city deteriorate as he stuffs his fat, husky face. Looper is the one catering to the mayor’s greedy stomach. The mayor is mean , hypocritical, and abuses his power. Nevertheless, the mayor is selfish, greedy, and narcissistic. DuPrau wants us to fall into the trap, believing that the mayor will do his job and save Ember. It is the perfect opposite. Doon and Lina display endurance and grit, they have the willpower to save the city from destitution. Ta-Nehisi Coates poses an inquisition about how Whites haven't made the past right. Coates states simply that Whites never truely made it up to the Blacks for slavery. The Whites had just said, "we meant well" and moved on. Coates brings this up by comparing the Whites "good intentions" to a sleeping pill. The idea of "good intention" is seen throughout history, not just American but worldwide. But how could one apologize for the past and make it right with those wronged? It's near impossible question to answer. Because how does one apologize for something that is like slavery?…

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the couple, John and Elizabeth Proctor, undergoes a series of complications that only continues to aggravate the already thinly veiled relationship they have. Their strife begins with John Proctor, a stern farmer of good faith, who is only concerned with any matters that either benefit or potentially scar his reputation. John, however, is of good faith only in the faces of the public. He conceals one dark secret to the public; he had an affair with Abigail, who used to be John Proctor’s servant, but was fired seven months ago when John’s wife exhumed the truth. John’s affair had caused great turbulence in his marital relationship with Elizabeth ever since. The couple now has a very unstable relationship because Elizabeth is very skeptical of John, as he has been seeing Abigail lately in Salem, and John is trying to reconcile for his actions. John feels that he is being “judged for lies” by his wife every time he comes back from a trip to Salem, although John is desperately trying to accommodate for his actions such as his endeavors to “please [his wife]” (Miller 52). Elizabeth on the other hand feels that since her husband had already cheated on her once, he could be inclined to do it again. Therefore, Elizabeth can no longer love John the way she used to, and she speaks in a cold and dispassionate manner towards him, making innuendos of John’s sinful act with Abigail. For instance, as John converses with Elizabeth after returning home from Salem, he “gets up, goes to her, [and] kisses her,” but Elizabeth “receives it with a certain disappointment,” which evinces that she is still distraught from the incident seven months ago (Miller 48). As both John and Elizabeth continue to struggle in their fragile relationship, tensions may become worse as Abigail becomes more and more desperate to be with John; she believes that John still has feelings for her and will do whatever it takes to be with him.…

The Giver movie and the Giver novel were very different. This is most likely because the Giver book was released in 1993 and the movie was made in 2014. First, the movie depicts the characters to look like they are eighteen or nineteen, in the book they are only twelve. Also, in the movie Jonas begins to see beyond like in the book, except he sees yellow, unlike in the book where he sees red. In addition to that, a more important difference would be that in the move Ashers´ job is drone pilot and he plays a much bigger role. In the novel, he is the director of recreation and he doesn't do anything important. Finally, in the movie, Fiona almost gets released because she helped Jonas leave. In the novel, Jonas does not receive help from Fiona…
