Education and leadership is what drives nursing practice today. With the constant growth of the nursing profession education is becoming more important to keep up with the change. In order to make change happen as a nurse you must have leadership skills. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) published a report addressing the future of nursing as we know it. This paper will focus on how the IOM report impacts nursing education, nursing practice, and nursing leadership.

They are called educational pathways to become a registered nurse (RN): The bachelors of Science in nursing (BSN), associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) and the diploma in nursing (IOM report brief, 2010). The idea of continuing higher education contributes to safe and quality health care delivery. The only way this can happen is if nurses today take a leadership role in their profession. Residency programs were started for new graduates to provide an orientation before they start working in the hospitals. I myself was in a residency program as a new grad. This program took me through the basics of working in the hospital and at the same time it was a refresher course for me just graduating from nursing school. 5). We need to function as a unit in order to make a change. When nurses take the initiative to take the roll of leaders, their leadership skills promote quality, safe, and effective health care. Nurses are the bridge between the doctor and their patients. Leadership is not only being able to delegate to another individual, it is also being able to communicate, initiate, and advocate to improve the standard of service. There are different types of leadership styles, one that stands out the most is the transformational Leadership style. This leadership style is based on building relationships and motivating staff members through a shared vision and mission (Frandsen, 2013). As nurses we all have a shared vision and mission, we come to work to motivate our co-workers not to tear them down. The key to great leadership is to be able to work well as a team and to follow other leaders. You have to remember even though you are a leader, there is always someone that is over you. Every leader must answer to someone else, so effective communication skills are a must have in this role. As nurses we all need to poses strong leadership
