THE FORD CASE Executive Summary
After carefully analyzing Ford’s existing supply chain I immediately became aware of its highly complex nature. This high level of complexity combined with other internal and external factors have pushed Ford to search for solutions in order to overcome the costly supply chain challenges that they are facing and may continue to face in the future. Ford’s major difficulty in their present system is: the inefficient control of their large data base and complex network of suppliers, the existence of independent distributors and their inability to communicate and serve their customers directly. Realizing an urgent need to modify their supply chain in order to make it more cost effective and more profitable, and after careful analysis of the whole situation, I have recommended the partial implementation and execution of the virtual integration direct business model that has been used by Dell. Through this model, Ford will use the emerging information technologies and internet as well as new ideas from high tech industries in order to interact and transact with their suppliers and end users. Furthermore, Ford can boost its sales by providing better customer service and by having faster communication between suppliers, manufacturers, and customers in the value chain. This proposed system will have to run concurrently with the existing supply chain so that Ford will cover both market segments at the same time. Since Dell and Ford are two different types of industries, one is in computer manufacturing and the other is in auto industry, it does not seem right for Ford to implement exactly the same "virtual integration model" as Dell. In fact, if Ford implements the full direct business model alone and abolished its existing supply chain then Ford will certainly run into a high risk of losing their business to competitors due to the fact that customers

Meanwhile I am also aware of its highly complex nature of auto manufacturing comparing with computer industry. It would be applicable for the customers to place order online as all their concerns are the price and specification. However with several 10 thousand dollars’ car, the customers would prefer to go to dealership to do test drive. Thirdly, I also realized it is an urgent need to modify their supply chain to make it more cost effective and more profitable. Therefore my decision is the partial implementation and execution of the virtual integration direct business model that has been used by Dell. Through this model, Ford will use the emerging information technologies and internet as well as new ideas from high tech industries in order to provide forecast and replenishment plan to their suppliers and allow end users to place order directly and make modification. Furthermore, Ford can boost its sales by providing better customer service and by having faster communication between suppliers, manufacturers, and customers in the value chain. This proposed system will have to run concurrently with the existing supply chain so that Ford will cover both market segments at the same time. Ford should set up a special department in order to handle this new business process. Investment in new high tech IT equipments is required as well as training should be provided before the new project’s kick off date.     Finding the right strategy for our company will be the start of our supply chain strategy. The main three are the Keiretsu network, virtual company, vertical integration. All three have their advantages and disadvantages. An example of a Keiretsu network would be our company working closely with a supplier, such as a motor manufacturer but not necessarily owing their company. A virtual company is network of independent companies—suppliers, customers, competitors, linked by information technology to share skills, costs, and access to one another 's markets. Such organizations are usually formed on the basis of a cooperative agreement with little or no hierarchy or vertical integration. This flexible structure minimizes the impact of the agreement on the participants ' individual organizations and facilitates adding new participants with new skills and resources. Such arrangements are usually temporary and dissolve once a common goal is achieved. A virtual enterprise is rarely associated with an independent legal corporation or brick and mortar identity of its own. (David Johnson, 2011) Finally vertical integration is one that we own all aspects of the supply chain. Our company would purchase or have the resources to manufacture all of the internal components of the power equipment. Of the three I would recommend using the Keiretsu network. Using this network allows us to have lower cost than a vertical integration. We also plan on running this company for a long period of time so I don’t feel that a virtual company would do well in the long term plans of this company.
