These dysfunctions include fear of conflict, absence of trust, avoidance of accountability, inattention to results, and lack of commitment. I’ve chosen to focus on fear of conflict, which I feel can stop a group or team from truly growing and expanding. This dysfunction can cause issues within teams such as boring meetings resulting in teammates failing to pay attention, failing to tap into all the opinions and perspectives of team members limited the scope of a team and their goals, and creating environments where back-channel politics and personal attacks thrive, which eliminates all trust amongst teammates. Teams that show that they engage in conflict have interesting and lively meetings, utilize the ideas of all team members, and minimize politics. Rusesabagina was in a major conflict in his country, but he kept his hotel operational and in the face of the conflict that surrounded he still kept the dream of freedom and the safety of those in his care alive.
