The Fence
SUMMARY OF THE FENCE

The setting is reflective of the kind of characters and the situation they would be in.

The nipa huts look desolate and empty, reflective of how their occupants behave and feel for each other.

They have no neighbors and yet the need for each other seems remote and distant. Hatred overrules. They are most afraid one of them would give way. The building of the fence seems necessary to protect themselves from each other.

Hatred comes from a betrayal-- when Aling Biang caught her husband with Aling Sebia, the childless widow.

Aling Biang could not forgive. Aling Sebia seems not remorseful as she matches the anger and hatred of Aling Biang. The husband left without a word and never came back. He is part of the mess, but left it unsettled.

The vegetable rows that used to separate the nipa huts are slowly dying. The owners are afraid that if they watered the vegetables, they would also at the same time nurture the plants of the other. This seems reflective of their unwillingness to forgive and live again.

Aling Sebia is going to deliver a child. Aling Biang is the only person who could help her. This could have been an opportunity for reconciliation, but after Aling Biang helps her there is complete silence.

The hatred goes on like a curse. The children of the two women grow unhealthy and ugly. Aling Biang implants hatred in Iking's heart, although Iking feels otherwise.

It is the very first music in his life. Although the notes are not complete, Iking likes to hear it.

When he reaches fifteen, he stops sleeping beside his mother. He wants to sleep by the door where he could hear the guitar being played. He is beginning to show signs of protest, but he is physically weak.

This time he knows it is the girl who plays the guitar. He wants to destroy the fence that is starting to decay. But his mother reinforces the decaying stakes which had been weathered by time.

The guitar stops playing.

Her anger is especially targeting Tayo because was half white and he was born out of wedlock. She was embarrassed of Tayo which is why she attempted to keep a distance between Tayo and her son Rocky; “’They’re not brothers,’ she’d say, ‘that’s Laura’s boy. You know the one.’ She had a way of saying it, a tone of voice which bitterly told the story, and the disgrace she and the family suffered. The things Laura had done weren’t easily forgotten by the people, but she could maintain a distance between Rocky, who was her pride, and this other, unwanted child” (65). Auntie’s anger and dislike toward Tayo was shown since the first day Tayo arrived to stay at her house; “He never knew what they said that night because the voices merged into a hum, like night insects around a lamp; but he thought he could hear Auntie raise her voice and the sound of pots and pans slamming together on the stove. And later he learned she did that whenever she was angry” (66). Auntie was angry that Tayo was going to stay with them because the whole village would be talking about Tayo’s mom and how she just left her half breed son with her family. This came about when Baba’s darkest secret was revealed by Rahim Khan. The secret was that Baba had slept with Ali’s wife Sanaubar and impregnated her, making Hassan his child. Amir went through a series of mixed emotions at this revelation. Initially the news made Amir furious. He thought of his father as a hypocrite due to all of the lessons he had thought him in his past. Baba once told Amir, ‘There is only one sin – ‘and that is theft…When you tell a lie, you steal someone’s right to the truth.’ (Pg.225) Due to this lesson, Amir couldn’t help but think that Baba’s theft was the worst kind of stealing, since “the things he’d stolen had been sacred: from me the right to know I had a brother, from Hassan his identity, and from Ali his honor.” (Pg.225). As Amir reflected on his father’s deception and betrayal, he started to see himself in a similar way. Amir realized that his father was more like him than he ever knew and this is when their relationship made the final shift. He saw how much they were one and the same. His feelings towards his father finally changed. “Baba and I were more alike than I’d ever known. We had both betrayed the people who would have given their lives for us.”(Pg.226). Amir finally realizes that Baba was a man who also made mistakes and lived with regret. He recognized that the negative behaviors he had witnessed from his father, came from the struggles he had while trying to deal with the guilt and failures of the past. In the same way Amir had also suffered from the terrible things he had done. The big difference is at the end of the day Baba was a better man than Amir was, but Amir knew he had time to change this. From here on, Amir took on the task of redeeming both his and Baba’s mistakes. He agreed to go on the search for Hassan’s orphaned son Sohrab and to take care of him and raise him like he was his…

In the alley, when watching transfixed as Hassan is tortured and humiliated by Assef, Amir opts to “[run]. [He] ran because he was a coward. [He] was afraid… maybe Hassan was the price [he] had to pay, the lamb [he] had to slay, to win Baba”. Knowing full well that Hassan would have gone to any length to protect Amir, for his perpetual loyalty never faltered, Amir fails to help the one who was always by his side in his time of need. For purely egocentric and self-protective reasons, and the fleeting gain of Baba’s attention, Amir betrays Hassan in an appalling manner, severing the ties of allegiance and brotherhood once holding them together.…

I believe the white families in this story were ignorant and lacking courage, which is why it ended so bitterly. They had a lovely house with a lovely, full family in a lovely neighborhood but the rumors of robberies became too much for them so they took action. The action being they barred up their windows so they couldn't see nature without steel in their way and they installed alarms they became accustomed to and they put up cement walls, ruining their fine tuned neighborhood. Last and most awful of all, the barbed fence caught their own boy and tore him apart. What was supposed to protect them was hurting them more than anything was before. If the families had courage to keep living life even when bad things happen the most precious things…

In Lahiri’s “A Temporary Matter”, the reader is introduced to Shoba, a woman who seems disorganized and who seems to not care about her looks, and her husband Shukumar. It is clear that the couple has been having difficulty communicating with one another and that their relationship has been drastically changed. The story is narrated in Shukumar’s point of view and he tells the reader stories about how the relationship used to be. He tells about how Shoba used to be a neat and organized person, but now she is somewhat lazy and messy. The reader also learns that Shoba used to cook for the two of them but now, Shukumar does all the cooking and cleaning in the house while Shoba works overtime every day. It is revealed to the reader that months prior to the start of the story, a pregnant Shoba went into labor and her child was born dead. Shukumar was not present when this occurred because he was at a conference which Shoba pushed him to go to. On his way to the conference he is thinking about what it will be like when the baby is born. He says, “He imagined a day when he and Shoba might need to buy a station wagon of their own, to cart their children back and forth from music lessons and dentist appointments” (Lahiri 3). This quote shows that he is very excited to become a parent and it also demonstrates his guilt that he was not there when Shoba miscarried. Throughout the course of the story, the couple reveals things to one another that they have never told. On the last night, Shoba reveals that she is moving out, and Shukumar reveals that he held their baby before it was cremated. This is particularly hard on Shoba because she herself did not even hold the baby. Shoba’s miscarriage caused a major communication gap between the couple. Since they never took the time to talk about it when it happened, they both had pent up feelings which they were unable to share with…
