If there was not a grand theater like the Globe theater, Shakespeare’s plays may not have been quite as successful. This amphitheater was approximately 100 feet in diameter, 43 feet wide, and 28 feet deep. The stage where the actors would perform was very complex in the fact that it had numerous trap doors, intricate paintings all over the ceiling, and did not contain curtains. Underneath the bottom floor was what people recognized as “hell”. Some people nicknamed it “the grave trap” because whenever someone would go down there it never would have a very favorable ending. In 1613, the Globe Theater burned to the ground from a canon that was shot during the performance of Henry VIII. The thatched roof caught fire from this shot and the original Globe Theater was no more. Another theater was built in its place to replace the old one, but eventually the Puritans closed it down and all things that provided entertainment to citizens. As many people know, Shakespeare is one of the most well-known poets of all time. He did not only write a great deal of plays and sonnets, but he also raised a family throughout the course of his work.
