The Differences Between Booker T. Washington And W. E. B. Du Bois
During our assigned weekly reading we read several primary sources relating towards how the Black community will advance and on which approach is best to uplift their people. After reviewing these documents, I notice the two opposing views between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois and the advantages/ disadvantages towards resistance and subserviences. In the Atlantic Compromise, Booker T. Washington essentially agreed that Southern blacks would not upset the social order of the South and would accept their position as lower class citizen as long as their basic education and their legal rights were be guaranteed. I do not agree with his speech, however considering who his audience is( elite white Southern men) and that he was looking for

    Washington asked the white people for support not equality. Booker T. Washington believed that African-Americans would not make it any where in society if they focused solely on equality. Washington wanted to have blacks trained for society and real life situations; he thought that this would improve black’s lives greatly.     In 1900 more than two-thirds of 10 million African Americans lived in the South; most were sharecroppers and tenant farmers. Rural or urban, Southern blacks faced poverty, discrimination, and limited employment opportunities. At the end of the 19th century, Southern legislatures passed Jim Crow laws that separated blacks and whites in public places. Because blacks were deprived of the right to vote by the grandfather clause, poll taxes, or other means, their political participation was limited. As African Americans tried to combat racism and avoid racial conflict, they clashed over strategies of accommodation and resistance. Booker T. Washington, head of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, urged blacks to be industrious and frugal, to learn manual skills, to become farmers and artisans, to work their way up economically, and to win the respect of whites. When blacks proved their economic value, Washington argued, racism would decline.     Washington presented his approach to an audience on September 18, 1895, when he delivered his Atlanta Compromise Address. In his address, Washington advised blacks to accept discrimination for the time being and concentrate on elevating themselves through hard work and an education and career in an industrial study, such as farming, enterprise, housekeeping, or thrift. He explained that this would earn the respect of whites and eventually incorporate them into society. Washington assured, “No race that has anything to contribute to the markets of the world is going to be in any degree ostracized” (Source D). DuBois, on the other hand, disagreed and argued that social change could only be accomplished by giving the black population a higher education and developing them into cultured individuals.     At a time when the Black community is being afforded a free status, but not one of equality, many leaders arise out of the woodwork to appeal to the white governing body for social equality. The transition from the ninetieth century to the twentieth century gives birth to two of these leaders, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois. These two men are both working to achieve a common goal, but the roads on which they're each traveling to get there differ significantly. Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois offer different strategies for dealing with the problems of poverty and discrimination facing Black Americans. Booker T. Washington's gradualism stance gives him wide spread appeal among both blacks and whites, although W.E.B. Du Bois has the upper hand when it comes to ideology dealing with economic prosperity and education amidst Blacks. Product of slavery, Reconstruction, and Black codes (Roark, et al p.616), Washington favors the humble - ask nicely; appreciate what you're given; and say "thank you" - approach to obtaining social equality. Washington addresses the issue with meticulous caution, in doing so he not only comes across as an advocate of Blacks gaining "all privileges of the law"(D), but also of Blacks being prepared "for the exercises of these privileges." By taking this approach Washington is gaining the appeal within the Black audience as well as the white community. In contrast to this seemingly effective stance, Du Bois stands on the platform of ask, but ask incessantly with a loud and firm voice. Du Bois even goes as far as to say that if the Black community wants social equality they must simply complain. "Ceaseless agitation"(F) he feels will do more in the fight for equality than "voluntarily throwing away"(E) the reasonable rights they are entitled to.     Alonzo Herndon was born into slavery because he was son of his master Frank Herndon and mother Sophenie. At age seven he was emancipated and began to work with his family members in social circle Georgia as a sharecropper. 13 years later he left and started a barber shop in Clayton County. After his business thrived he decided to invest in real estate, and then entered the insurance world. While pursuing a job in insurance he made Atlanta Life Insurance Company which had branches in Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas. After all of his success Herndon became the first black millionaire. Today his home is a national landmark. Was one of the founding members of the Negro business League, He also contributed to the Niagara movement. Helped fund Atlanta University. John hope was an important African American educator and race leader of the early 1900’s. In 1906 he became the first black president of Morehouse college (which was the same that Martin Luther King Jr. was born.) he also 23 years later became first African American president of Atlanta University. Was part of the Niagara movement, The NAACP, YMCA, and Colored Men’s Department. He also went to Brown University in providence, Rhode Island. Hope taught at a small liberal arts school in the outskirts of Nashville, Tennessee. Hope married Lugenia burns in 1897.Moved to Atlanta and taught at Atlanta Baptist College which later became Morehouse. Died of pneumonia in 1936 at the age of sixty-seven. These two men have many similarities because of the fact that they are both civil rights leaders and activists they have more even closer relationships.
