Curse of the Breakfast Buffet

Life wasn’t going anywhere or at least, that’s what Bruce thought as he stood in line at the AA meeting breakfast buffet. It had been his wife’s idea for him to seek help for his alcohol problems.

The meetings always started early and Bruce’s wife had threatened him with divorce if he didn’t comply with her demands. As he listened, he could hear the chewing of his fellow participants. It was obvious none of them wanted to be there. It was obvious their better halves had wanted them to get some help for their issues with the bottle.

If he listened harder, he could hear the faint ting of the toaster in the kitchen.

“Ah, damn it! Stupid toaster!”

A cook stumbled out of the kitchen, his hands blackened with ash.

Angela’s eyebrows shot up, questioningly. “Care to explain why this toaster is blackened to the point of death?”

Michael opened and closed his mouth, unable to get a word out.

“You look like a fish unable to breathe in fresh air,” Angela said flatly, showing how annoyed she actually was. “You had better give me an explanation as to why this appliance is beyond repair within in the next five seconds otherwise I will be reporting your worthless butt to the coordinators.”

There was something in her voice that told the guys she wasn’t kidding.

“I…I, ah…” Michael’s eyes turned to the toaster instead of Angela’s face.

“He plugged it into a faulty socket!” Bruce cried as Angela silently back to zero on her fingers from five.

Angela’s eyes widened.

Michael’s did as well.

“You’re really defending a man you only just met? Why on heaven and Earth would you do something like that?” Angela questioned.

“I don’t believe in punishment for minor offences. How was he supposed to the toaster was going to die when he plugged it into the socket? If you want to bully him for something like that, you don’t deserve to work here yourself.” Bruce drew himself up to make himself look more
