Although Marjane's family enjoys having parties and drinking, before that, they also take precautions such as having the masking tape to protect against flying glass from the bombs and setting up black curtains to hide themselves from the neighbors while having the party(Satrapi 105 panel 1). Even though they all know how dangerous is it if the government officials finds out that they are having these illegal actions, the reason why Marjane’s family still wants to hold the party, drink alcohol and produce their own wines is because they just want to pretend like nothing is happening and forget all about the wars and everything around them and to enjoy every “last” moment of their lives. Also, people seek to keep their regular routines

However, I don’t believe this is true because by her trying the first cigarette, it only shows her curiosity as a child, the influence from her family members who are addicted to cigarette and most importantly, her personal rebellion against her mom’s dictatorship which is somehow childish. Also, go from being a child to an adult is not as easy as Marjane thinks it might be. Even though Marjane is gradually showing progress such as having rebellions, curiosity and thinking somehow maturely, she still needs a lot of other factors such as experiences, knowledges and independence to be truly and fully grown up.

What the one-paged panel on page 116 is depicting is that Marjane is expressing her own opinion about the war that’s going on around her for years. Also, I agree with Marjane because if the war continues, it’ll just be great losses on both sides without any purpose or meaning, what both sides should’ve done would be to have more communications among the government officials and come to an

In the chapter, “The Cigarette” Satrapi uses a brilliant job of conducting image analysis within the reader by using extensive use of scale. One of the main ideas of this chapter is to describe how disgusted Satrapi is with the decisions the government is making: “When I think we could have avoided it all… It just makes me sick. A million people would still be alive.” (Satrapi 116) On this full page spread, Satrapi demonstrates her use of scale in multiple ways. First, Satrapi depicts a large amount of troops in the panel to stress to the reader just how many people died. As Satrapi told us in the the speech bubble at the bottom of the panel, it makes her sick that one million people have to die. Satrapi has gotten her idea of this across by showing a large number of people fighting in the panel to draw sympathy from the reader. Secondly, Satrapi makes this such a large panel to stress the importance of this topic to the readers. One million people dead is a big deal. Imagine all of…

Education is extremely important in the lives of Iranians in general, and in Marjane. Your education level is the basis on how people are judged in Iran, and opens you up for different job opportunities as it does in the United States. I feel like Marjane at the beginning of the book felt that education was necessary but bias. What I mean by this is that she was upset that she was forced to learn what the government wanted to teach them, and not what they believed. However, in the books final pages Marjane comes to the realization that “One must educate oneself…

Stephen King’s short story “Quitters, Inc.” involves a smoker trying to kick the habit, and getting results no matter the means. Dick Morrison meets Jimmy McCann, an old friend, in the bar of the Kennedy International airport. McCann has stopped smoking, gained a promotion, and become physically fir since the last time they met. He tells Morrison about an agency that helped him quit smoking and gave him a business card for Quitters, Inc., which Morrison just put in his wallet. A month later he sees the card fall out of his wallet and decides to go see them. Upon going to Quitters, Inc., Morrison meets Vic Donatti, the man in charge of his case. Morrison signs a contract saying that he won’t reveal anything they do in the course of his treatment. Donatti tells Morrison that he will never smoke again after that day. When he goes back for his next appointment, Donatti starts by punching the cigarettes Morrison had on him whilst still smiling. Donatti then reveals how much they know about their clients by referencing Morrison’s handicapped son who he told them nothing about. Donatti tells him that he is a pragmatist, or someone who is oriented towards the success or failure of something through practical means. Donatti shows Morrison that a rabbit can be taught that eating food will cause an electric shock to occur and therefore after enough aversion training the rabbit will starve itself to avoid the shock. Donatti then explains the various ways they discipline their clients for slipping up, the tenth and last being death. They guarantee you won’t ever smoke again. After a series of non-smoking, Morrison slips up, his wife is kidnapped, and he is called in to watch her get electrocuted for thirty seconds. Afterwards she tells him that she understands what they are trying to do. After months of not smoking Morrison gains weight and Donatti says that if he can’t lose it they will cut off his wife’s pinky finger. After that Morrison…
