The Cheez: A Short Story
Cheez-its are banned in the cafeteria from now on, all because of what happened on November 14th. This wasn't anybody's fault. It was an awful, awful accident . He coughed and coughed and coughed and finally the Cheez-its went flying out of his throat on to the flour. Then, Mrs. Conway walked by. She was quickly walking and smiling at all the eighth grade students, who happen to be her favorite students of all time. I do not think she saw the slippery, slimey, gooey mess of Cheez-its on the floor. As she took her next step, her feet slid out from under her. “It’s time for lunch!” the teacher announced. Candide was quite confused, as the clocked seemed to read 11:00 PM. He was very impressed with the teacher’s tremendous analytical proficiency, for she could figure out what time it was, even though the clock was clearly not accurate. As the loud and droning sound of the bell rang, all the children ran out of the classroom as soon as they could. “How fantastic! I can’t wait to taste the mystical delicacies of Diamond Bar High School!” Candide fought his way through the crowd, but eventually reached the lunch line. Standing in the hot sun, Candide squinted as he struggled to read the lunch menu. “Special: week-old rice with a side of mystery meat emulsion” caught Candide’s eye. Candide’s mouth watered with delight as his eyes feasted upon those words. He couldn’t wait through the long line, so he walked past ten people in front of him, stood next to an unsuspecting individual, and made a new friend. As soon as he received his food, he exclaimed, “This is fantastic, this is what I have been waiting all that time for! It looks too good to eat.” Candide stared down at his tantalizing and healthful meal as he picked it up and took a bite. “Amazing! This is the most enjoyable flavor I have ever had the pleasure of tasting! There is nothing I admire more than a pungent and flavorful mix of rubber and…

Chesnutt’s conjure stories subvert post-Civil War plantation fiction because they touch on the horrors that slaves went through at the hand of their white masters. How African American are treated lesser than human beings. They are objects to whites that can be moved anywhere at the right price and without a moment’s notice to the person and their loved ones. He does not try to make it seem like everything will end up okay in the end. All of the characters do not get a happy ending. The stories bring up matters that are sensitive and need to be looked at with a fresh eye. While there is humor to the stories, Chesnutt subtly lets the Atlantic Monthly white readers know that what many whites did to African Americans was wrong.…

In regards to whether or not we should ban sodas and fast food on the campus of State University, I disagree with this action. I do not think that we should ban fast food or sodas because people are entitled to what they want to eat. By prohibiting fast food and sodas, we would outrage some of the students and they would feel some of their rights are taken by limiting their number of food sources they are entitled to. Even though the obesity rate is high in the USA, people still have the right to consume anything that they want to. Whether or not they know the consequences of what they are putting into their bodies is not our problem, but we can’t take away from them. Life is all about choices. They choose…

Have you ever received a school lunch, looked at it, and wondered, “What in the world is that”? Of course you have, that’s what school lunches are known for. I can recall numerous times when I couldn’t tell what kind of slime was jiggling on my lunch tray; was it the Macaroni and Cheese slime or was it the Nacho’s slime? School lunches really put the “sloppy” in Sloppy Joes and students shouldn’t be served such food at school. Schools are supposed to promote healthy, successful lifestyles, but how are they supposed to accomplish that when their school lunches are so unsuccessful and unhealthy? Serving healthier lunches in schools will benefit many aspects of a student’s life in the classroom and outside of the classroom as well. The government needs to mandate healthier lunches in schools to develop healthier eating habits in children, meet parent’s expectations, and to increase classroom performance.…
