Well, is Shawn completely stuck in neutral or is he just hiding his current condition behind his miraculous seizures?The book, Stuck in Neutral by Terry Trueman, is a fiction dramatic novel about the main character who is a 14-year-old boy called Shawn Mcdaniel, who tells the story by a perspective by telling the reader about his condition called C.P (Cerebral Palsy) which prevents him to control any part of his body. Shawn is sophisticated and thinks normally as if he were a normal teenager, but he is also looked down upon by his father due to his pain-looking seizures. However, most people including his father, Sydney Mcdaniel, are completely bias and judges poorly towards the way how Shawn is disabled to communicate properly with others. Shawn dreamed that one day, he can experience and enjoy life as a normal teenager, but only his seizures give him that opportunity. On the other hand, the seizures that Shawn experienced when he was a kid get tolerated by his father since he thought it was total pain to him. However, Sydney Mcdaniel, doesn’t understand that mentally disabled people like Shawn deserve freedom perfectly fine like normal kids; only his seizures give him the ability for his true senses to the real world. Shawn’s seizures represent his spirit in an alternate reality to truly experience the importance of past memories, ecstasy, and differentiation as if he were a normal teenager.

The flashbacks that Shawn experienced are recreated in his own image through his seizures to visualize the true essence of life. For example, according to Shawn’s seizures, “I remember sitting at the edge, touching Cindy’s hands, looking at my father’s eyes... and all these memories are hazy.” (30) This clearly that Shawn barely remembers much of his old seizure travelings when he was a kid. Yet, he needs to revisit those places to clearly remember the important meaning in life, even if he is a mentally disabled young boy. In addition, Shawn even remembers an event: When...
