Due to unfortunate circumstances, I will be lecturing you solely from Gary Ross' Seabiscuit with Randy Newman composing the soundtrack. For a brief overview, the movie starts with a wealthy man, Charles Howard, losing his son and looking for some way to grieve. He begins to race horses and meets Tom Smith, an old-time horse trainer. Together, they spot the unconventional Seabiscuit who Smith sees potential that no one else does. Smith convinces Howard to buy the horse and they find Red Pollard to ride the horse. All of the key parts of this movie are unconventional: Red is too big to be a jockey, Seabiscuit is too small to be a prized horse and Smith is well past his time but somehow they make it work. Seabiscuit gains popularity in a time where Americans needed to be distracted from the Depression Era. The movie continues by Howard wanting Seabiscuit to go up against the "greatest" horse, War Admiral. War Admiral's owner wants no part to do with it. Eventually, they agree to race but not before Pollard seriously injures himself. Seabiscuit is ridden by the greatest jockey of all time and beats the War Admiral. In the next race, Seabiscuit also injures himself. The rest of the movie is Seabiscuit and Red recovering together and later winning the last race shown in…

Early in "The Castle," the happy Kerrigan family is served a chicken dinner by Sal, wife of proud Darryl and mother of daughter Tracey and sons Dale, Steve and Wayne; Wayne, currently in prison, is the only one missing from the table. Dad (Michael Caton) observes something on the chicken and asks his wife (Anne Tenney) what it is. "Seasoning," she says proudly. Dad beams: "Seasoning! Looks like everybody's kicked a goal." And so life spins along at 3 Highview Crescent in Melbourne, where the Kerrigan home sits surrounded by its built-on rooms, screened-in porch, greyhound kennel, big-dish satellite and carport. For Darryl, it is not so much a house as a shrine to one of the best darn families in the universe, and he proudly points out the plastic…

The storytelling technique made use by Cameron in the film Titanic is special because history and fiction is inculcated within the plot. For example, Cameron made use of the history of RMS Titanic as the main plot of the film. But he was aware of the fact that mere history of a cruise ship will not satisfy the global viewers. So, he decided to inculcate fiction and romance to the main plot. Parisi (1998), states that “Cameron’s gift was to create a unique movie going experience, one audiences couldn’t get from any other film” (202). One can easily identify that inculcation of fiction and romance is helpful for the director to be free from portraying a film from historical perspective. At the same time, the historical…

A joint cast from Melbourne High School and Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School were recently involved in a production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. The cast, led by Gilbert Stalinsfield as John Proctor and Greta Nash as Elizabeth Proctor, was able to captivate the audience for an the entirety of the performer. Director Anne-Marie Brownhill’s interpretation of the play, while short, allowed for each actor to contribute his or her own ideas to the story without removing the overlying theme of the empowerment provided through lies and playing on people’s fears. Each actor showed a deep understanding of the plot and was able to convey the message about McCarthyism and the symbolism of the witch hunts for the way people were suspected and persecuted in the 50s when McCarthy was most influential. Miller’s work successfully illustrates the parallels between the series of events that occurred in the late 1600s known as the Salem Witch Trials and the events that had been occurring during the time that The Crucible was written in the 1950s. The combined cast from Melbourne High School and Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School were incredibly impressive in their demonstration of these issues and the effects that these…

On Golden Pond. This family melodrama is about two older adults and one dealing with his older age and how the aging couple cares for their daughter's stepson. This is probably the most wholesome films about death I have ever seen. The primary conflict is Norman's fear of death and his unfinished business. Norman was portrayed as a bitter old man, but he was much deeper than that. Throughout the movie, you can see just how hard his age is now “hitting” him. He tries to fix his troubled past, as well as make new relationships to make his future brighter. All in all it was a very moving film.…

The memoir, The Glass Castle written by Jeannette Walls has been converted into a movie in which was released on August 11, 2017. The movie also called The Glass Castle was written and directed Destin Daniel Cretton. In the movie Jeannette Walls was being played by Brie Larson, Rex by Woody Harrelson, and Rose Mary by Naomi Watts. My expectations were set high for the movie due to me having the background knowledge of the book and it's fine details. Therefore it did not meet my expectations as much as I wanted it to because some of the scenery descriptions given in the book and what the actors said in the film didn't correspond to the novel.…
