Although most of your characters were believable in your powerful tale of revenge, The Cask of Amontillado, I found your narrator, Montresor to be quite unreliable. Could it be that you did not intend for me to sympathize with Montresor for the insult made by Fortunato, but rather to judge him? Frankly, I found him to be smug and egotistical, while questioning his sanity. He did not convince me that his intentions were honorable to support his family’s motto: “Nemo me impune lacessit,” or “No one assails me with impunity.”…

When Fortunato is drunk beyond consciousness, Montresor begins to quickly stack and place the bricks meant for his tomb, as he shouts for a taste of Amontillado. Once he is buried alive, only bones other than the slight twinkling of bells continue to ring in his tomb; Fortunato chose the opportunity to sample exquisite wine over his very life, the reason for which Montresor found repulsive enough to enact revenge. As if his entire being relied on tasting the wine, he finally received enlightenment on how his priorities should be, according to Montresor, after he has finally passed. The chained bones left in the tomb fifty years ago are not even thorns in Montresor’s conscience, for he knows that Fortunato finally received what he desperately…

In the beginning of the "The Cask of Amontillado," the reader learns that Fortunato has insulted the main character and narrator of the story, whose name, Montresor, we do not learn until the very end of story. However, we purposely are never told just how Montresor was offended by Fortunato. Montresor states that he "must not only punish, but punish with impunity." Montresor wants revenge for Forunato's wrongdoing, but he does not want to be punished for what he will do to Fortunato. Montresor's innate desire causes him to thoroughly plan for his former friend's murder, but he is sensible and desires that his deeds will not damage him or his reputation. This is mainly because Montresor believes he is fully justified in killing Fortunato for his insults and thus should not be punished for what he believes is doing the right thing.…

Their dress reveals their distinct features. Fortunato dresses himself as a clown: “The man wore motley. He had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells.” His dress shows vitality. However, Montresor “[puts] on a mask of black silk and [draws] a roquelaire closely about [his] person.” The black mask seems to indicate the death, which is a striking contrast to Fortunato’s. And Montresor’s preparation of cloth protects him from the severe coldness and dampness of the wine cellar, while Fortunato wears few clothes and has a cough. This reveals Montresor’s premeditated murder and Fortunato’s unsuspecting mind.…

He waits to carry out his plan because he does not want to alarm Fortunado. When the time is right, Montresor knows just how to tempt Fortunato into going into the catacombs under his home. Fortunato's weakness is wine and Montresor knows the he prides "himself upon his connoisseurship in wine" (1442). He knows that if he tells Fortunato that he has a rare wine, Amontillado, in his catacombs that Fortunato will not be able to resist going into the catacombs to taste it. Montresor mentions another who tastes wine and that many believe he is just as good as Fortunato in doing so. Mentioning this angers Fortunato and he is compelled to taste the wine instead of being insulted by Montresor getting another to taste it for him. Montresor takes everything into consideration. He also knows that Fortunato will be intoxicated on such an event as the festival. Because of this, Fortunato's "guard" is let down. Montresor even accounts for the attendants at his home. "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge." The opening line of the story presents irony of situation. "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me" is a sentence most all of us remember from childhood. Poe's speaker says the opposite. He has suffered injuries without complaint, but insults he will not abide. The protagonist Montresor has a name that means "my treasure." He declares his intention to wreak vengeance on unfortunate Fortunato, who has committed some unspecified insult to Montresor's name and reputation. Additionally, "a wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes the redresser." Montresor seeks not just to punish, "but to punish with impunity."…

In addition to vengefulness, Montresor was also a clever person. By the third paragraph it is evident that Montresor formulated a plan to carry out against Fortunato. Montresor stated “I continued, as was my intent to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation” (Poe, 1). The narrator then went into detail about Fortunato’s weak points. “He had weak points, this Fortunato” (Poe, 1). Montresor knew that Fortunato was an expert on wine. “He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine” (Poe, 1). Montresor also knew that Fortunato was not skilled in painting or gems. He proved that when he said “In painting and gemmary, Fortunato, like his countrymen, was a quack, but in the matter of old wines he was sincere” (Poe, 1). This displayed Montresor’s high mental alertness.…
