The Book Thief Narrative
The novel The Book Thief wouldn't be the same without the unique narrator, Death. Death is not a human being and because of this he or she can be in anywhere. He or she can feel the emotions of character that some cannot. Death also has characteristics that are perfect for the story. The characteristics that Death withholds also makes him or her the best narrator for this story.

Death is not a physical being and can travel anywhere he or she desires. This can move along the story much more quickly. If Liesel or Hans was the narrator they wouldn't be able to describe what it was like for the other person if they weren't there with them. Death can be with Hans and jump to Liesel the next second. The readers can know more this way. Since Death

He or she understood the emotions that Liesl felt when her brother died and the emotions that were felt when Liesel and Rudy were about to get caught stealing apples with the others. He felt and understood all of them. If Liesel hid her feelings deep down and none of the characters knew about it, parts of the story might not make since if she all of a sudden exploded with what ever emotion she kept within. It also lets us understand their personalities or relationships. For if we didn't know about the emotions that were running through the Liesel head when her brother died how would we know that she was sad. She could have been extremely happy. This would let us know about their relationship. If she was sad she probably had a good relationship with her sibling but if she was happy she most likely didn't have they nest relationship and or was treated badly by her brother, and had a possibly abused.

Death can be very sarcastic and at the perfect times and it can make the story so funny. Death is a unique narrator. With all of the books I have read by far, this is my favorite narrator because of all of the ways he or she informs the readers about new characters and what they are like in a point form like format and important information the same

This Passage reminds me of the similar situation that has happened to Liesel when her younger brother, Werner, died suddenly during their trip to Germany. Similarly, Arthur Berg is also going through this situation, but with his sister dying in his arms. Also, when death, the narrator says that he "could sense [that] he would hold her for hours," it reminds me of Liesel shaking his brother as she doesn’t believe that he is dead. (Zusak 167) As well, these passage allows the reader to understand that death can arrive at anytime, leaving their loved ones in sorrow, which is also one of theme that is revealed through this piece of…

It shows how death changed the characters Thomas and Andy and how their perspective of life changed drastically for them. If nobody died in these stories there would basically be no story at all, you would be left with the sad remains with no suspense or any emotion at all. These deaths's clearly have changed their thoughts on life differently they still have very similar outlooks on the deaths. So in the end, Thomas and Andy share the common theme of death because they both are shocked by death, someone had committed suicide and lastly they both witness a death or…

In every story the characters are the ones who captivate a reader. In Zusak’s novel “The book thief” he makes an effort to create characters with enough personality that they didn’t even need to be described. There are many attitudes and reactions that characters have trough out the book, and they give away who they really are. The characters seem so real that at a certain point, the reader could forget the characters are not real. One example of that “reality confusion” is how Death portraits himself as a human.…

This passage makes me feel sad because of the sudden death of Liesel. As a result, this prompts me into realizing that one of theme of this book is about how life is unpredictable. An example of this is when Liesel dies without warning. I can relate to this theme because a friend of mine from elementary has committed suicide and none of her friends knew until her parents posted a post on Facebook declaring that she has died. Therefore, I've learned that cherishing the people around me is important as they might die without warning, like…

She is beginning to grasp the concept of reading and is seeing the effect words can have on people. She sees that words can be weapons. During the 1940’s, Hitler was in power. Hitler used words instead of guns and money to take over. He manipulated and tricked people into believing what he was doing was right. This shows that words can give someone the ability to rule and take charge if used in the right way. On page 262, Liesel is very rude to Frau Hermann. Liesel gets very angry that Isla cancelled her washing and uses words to insult Ilsa Hermann and damage the relationship they had. Later on Liesel apologises to Ilsa, but before she does, she feels terrible about the nasty things she…

Death is a horrendous thing that can cause an irreplaceable hole in somebody’s life. Death can also represent chaos and the pain of another character in the story. In Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck, the deaths of Johnny, Dally, and Bob created an intriguing plot and unveiled the hidden feelings and personalities of characters who react to the deaths, like Dally and Randy. The major deaths in The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, which are the deaths of Candy’s Dog, Curley’s Wife, and Lennie, displayed the personalities of the characters who killed them and developed the story in the book. The theme of death reveals hidden elements of characters who strongly felt a certain way about the character. Even though death is the end of a character, it…

Liesel has a great passion for books and it is first shown when her brother dies and she steals her first book The Gravedigger’s Handbook. The second time Liesel steals a book, she is seen by Ilsa who is one of the clients of Liesel's mother Rosa Hubermann. Liesel faces an argument with Ilsa and this is how she used the power of words: “It’s about time,” she informed her, “that you do your own stinking washing anyway. It’s about time you faced the fact that your son is dead. He got killed! He got strangled and cut up more than twenty years ago! Or did he freeze to death? Either way, he’s dead! He’s dead…

Throughout this journal, one can question why the author wrote the book from the perspective of death and what will happen to Max Vandenburg. Initially, there is the question of why the narrator of the novel is the entity of death. One answer to this question is that writing the book through death’s perspective is both creative and different. Having death speaking personally to you on the first page is a unique draw-in. There are no other books popularly known that can claim to have such a narrator, which makes it stand out from its competition on the bookshelves. As the New York Times states in a review for the book, “brilliant… It’s the kind of book that can be life-changing” (Zusak). This quote clearly shows that the author’s decision in having death be…

Through this, the reader can come to the conclusion that death not just an action to the speaker, but an important tangible figure. In the line “We drove slowly -- He knew no haste” Death becomes a sentient being that travels with the speaker. Likewise the line “We passed the school, where Children strove” creates a real image of the journey Death is taking the speaker on. Such personification emphasizes the respect and importance Death has for the speaker. If the speaker didn’t respect Death, Death wouldn't be a travel companion, rather an end or action that leads to an abyss. The humanization of Death allows the reader to better understand and fathom the respectful and pleasant relationship the speaker has with the…

How do we foresee death? How do we as humans accept fate, that all living must die? Sometimes its is hard to understand as shown in the poems, Janet waking by John Crowe Ranson, Because I could not stop for death by Emily Dickenson, and Barbie doll by Marge Pierce. Death can be seen differently by everyone and these authors definitely had different views. In the poem “Because I could not stop for death” the author has personified death, as if to make it easier for the reader.…
