The Book Of Farewells
The Book of Kells is thought to be written in Latin around 800 AD by Columbian monks when Jesus was born; this book is astonishingly famous because it contains the four gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. When you look closely at the book, you notice the papers that were used in 800 AD are not similar to the ones you write on today. In the 800 AD, monks would purchase vellum or calfskin if they wanted to write because the skin was really dense and convenient for them. In addition, the monks needed a tool to write with, so, they would use feathers from a goose because the tips from the feathers are sharp. And, in order to be able to get ink on the calfskin, the feathers tip needed to hold a naturally made ink that came from plants, copper, or fruits. The colours of ink that are seen in …show more content…
For example, on one part of the book there are two snakes facing each other, this was hard to see because the two snakes looked like the corner of the drawing. Other types of animals were also drawn that have not been identified in today’s world. Monks decided to draw so many animals on their book because it was not only a work of art, but it was also a symbol of power. In addition, I learned that the Book of Kells was not taken care of by the original monks. It wasn’t until other monks discovered the book and fixed the careless mistakes that were made. For instance, if you see an animal that is surrounded in red dotted lines that means there was a mistake made. The animal and the red dots were used to remind the monks of the mistake, this will help them recall what they did, and correspondingly, instead of using hyphen symbols the monks would get creative and draw an animal too. Again, these techniques would make it easier for the book to read. Moreover, as we might know today, snake are characterize as a symbols of

This book focuses on the of number southern black and white who opposed the confedecy. He documented in The Road to Disunion, that anti-Confederates got strength from the weakness of slavery in the Border South, while slavery stunted population growth. The author argues that the varying support of the upper and lower South contributed to the fall of the Confederacy placing most of the blame on anti confederalist. He states that anti-Confederate whites undermined the Confederacy by remaining outside the nation while slaves unified form within and enlisted into the Union Army. Both groups guaranteed that the Union would have more men for the army which cause the Confederacy to lose because anti-Confederates waged war against Confederate southerners. That author also discusses the neutrality of the border slave states that made the Confederate war effort vulnerable. Losing nearly half of the slave states neutrality and the support for the Union army's invasion damaged the geography and population that the Confederacy could use for its defense.…

Neil Gaiman is a prolific author best known for his legendary Sandman series, as well as other award winning novels and I with no hesitation can say that The Graveyard Book (also award-winning) is up to par with those standards. What initially intrigued me to read this book was when I learned that it was Gaiman’s nod to the classic, and one of my favorites, children’s story The Jungle Book. Like Mowgli, the protagonist, Nobody “Bod” Owens is orphaned. However, in this novel, The Jungle Book’s pack of animals is replaced by the ghouls and ghosts of a graveyard. In line with many of Gaiman’s work the book falls under the genre of fantasy and horror but also blended together with supernatural characters from legends and mythology to create Bod’s gothic coming of age tale.…

Throughout high school, relationships come up left and right. With those relationships, tension is just waiting to come, fights already starting. War is just the same, fight after fight until someone dies, or gets hurt. In “A Farewell to Arms”, Frederick Henry is in a similar relationship that is being torn apart by war with Catherine Barkley. Frederick Henry is an ambulance driver who is at the front in a relationship with Catherine, a British nurse. At the front, their relationship short, and horrid, while away, their relationship flourishes. This change in Frederick Henry’s relationship shows Ernest Hemingway’s thematic message that war is dehumanizing, and ruins your life.…

I look out my room window and see the rising sun. The brilliant red globe sheds its light on the earth, and illuminates the myriad of fresh green leaves that have emerged in the wake of spring. I open my window, through which a light breeze, the same wind that is ruffling the very leaves, enter. The scene is perhaps an epitome of peace. It is quite surprising to think that this is the same place that is under a threat of an ever-potential war. Just a few weeks ago our northern neighbor initiated an attempt to launch a rocket into the air - an attempt that, despite its drastic failure, nonetheless created an atmosphere of great tension.…

"The most beautiful as well as the most ugly inclinations of man are not part of a fixed biologically given human nature, but result from the social process which creates man." -Erich Fromm. Fromm is depicting exactly what A Farewell to Arms illustrates, which is that men are born neither good nor evil instead their actions define them. This is much like the philosophies of the Sophists like Jean Paul Sartre who also said that the existence of man comes before the essence of man, or in other words a man’s actions determines his nature. In his book, A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway demonstrates how people are desperately trying to act purely despite their sins by contrasting the motif of clean and dirty and having Fredric Henry washing himself all the time.…
