The Black Cat By Edgar Allan Poe
The story “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe is a story based on the phenomenon’s he’d do when he was intoxicated therefore not in his right mind. Not content with the multiple events that happened in his house, he was abashed nevertheless disgusted with himself. You’d never think he’d come to avail such a trait as a result of being an animal person with a kind heart. In his younger years he found a girl that shared the same bond as him with animals consequently he married her. One out of the abounding animals they had together was a black cat named Pluto, he wasn't like any other cat. Smart as well as eminently intelligent, always following him around everywhere he would come about. But one night he came home drunk and thought Pluto resisted

    The problems of alcoholism and insanity are recurring themes in Poe’s literary works. One can say that “The Black Cat,” one of Poe’s short stories, portrays much of the author’s own views on his substance abuse problems and mental illness. The unnamed narrator from “The Black Cat,” struggles with his addiction to alcohol and his hatred for two cats become prevailing. The narrator states, however, that he was never like this before he loved animals, “never was so happy as when feeding and caressing them.” (Poe, 3). The narrator takes on a cat and cares for it, however, as his drinking problem progressed, he states, “I grew day by day more moody… my disease grew upon me.” (Poe, 4). After a night out drinking, he decides to cut out one of the cat’s eyes and ultimately, kills the cat. Later, another cat strangely identical to the first cat with one eye comes around and as the narrator tries to kill the second cat he ends up killing his wife instead. He buries the body of his wife and the second cat behind a wall and police later hear the cat calling out from inside the wall. In relation to Poe’s life, Poe was known to love cats and had a female cat named Catterina (Mercier). The killing of the first cat relates to Poe’s own destruction of the things he loved and desired due to alcoholism. He lost his job in 1837 due to his drinking and feuding with other editors (Edgar Allan Poe, Encyclo.) The killing of an innocent wife can closely relate to Poe’s views of women in his own life, through the deaths of both his mother figures and then eventually his wife.     “Cathedral” is a very complex short story. Although the actual story only takes up about 5 pages, that’s all Raymond Carver needed to compel an invigorating enlightenment. The narrator of this story is unnamed yet we get to see him grow rapidly in this short story. After meeting Robert, who at one time was his wife’s boss, he begins to see the world differently, and is able to change his views and realize the world isn’t as black and white as he would like it to be. When we meet the narrator he is awaiting Roberts’s arrival with little delight. He constantly speaks to his wife about his little interest in meeting the blind man which his wife finds so captivating. We quickly begin to see the narrator’s jealousy towards Robert; he makes jokes about his blindness, speaks about sightseeing and makes other ridiculous suggestions about what him and Robert should do. We then realize he is only a naive jealous man who dislikes the fact that his wife thinks so highly of him, especially since he is blind and in the narrators eyes has nothing to offer. After meeting Robert the narrator continues to have this wall up, he does speak to him and even treats him well, but the whole time in his head kept wondering what his wife found so interesting. The proof of change for this character is sparked at the very end of the story, when the narrator closes his eyes and draws alongside Robert and realizes this man who is blind has a clearer view on reality then he does.…
