The Bible References in Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales
When talking about Grimm Brothers fairy tales it is a valid statement to say that those stories are fulfilled with some religious aspects and backgrounds. Although none of them is more explicit about it as far as ‘THE TWELVE BROTHERS’ tale is.
The very first reference to a religious aspect is that they are twelve as the apostles of the Bible, and one of them, the youngest had the name of one bible character – Benjamin- who was too the 12st son of Jacob also, who had a daughter too. The next reference is the Golden Star on the girl’s forehead, which is a compost symbol with two pieces, the first is gold, and it evokes what is illuminated, sacred and durable. The second is Star, it symbolize “the presence of divinity” (Cooper, 156). Like the brothers on this fairy tale, Jacob once had to flee from the wrath of his brother Esau.
When the princess took off the flowers from earth she deflowered her brother she committed an incestuous act. The brothers turned into Ravens, which are in the Bible god messengers and prophets, as a punishment to the incestuous act and she was not punished too because of being a divinity and sacred being. The seven years of silence that she had to obey can be a reference to Mary of Sorrows, which symbol is a heart pierced by seven swords, each sword meaning one of the sorrows that she had to face.
The latter reference is the step-mother who persuades the King to send his beloved wife to the fire, acting like the Devil stacking his claim of the sinner princess.

n the Jacob and Esau Panel, Ghiberti utilized a new system of linear perspective to construct the narrative. He arranged the episodes of the story around a vanishing point framed by the central arch. This panel, with its nearly three-dimensional foreground figures and impressive architecture, shows that the artist was at the cutting edge of Florentine illusionism and storytelling. In the panel, Jacob obtains the birthright of his elder brother, Esau, and the blessing of their father, Isaac, thus becoming the founder of the Israelites. Rebekah is shown giving birth to the twins beneath the arcade on the far left.…

“Billy stared into the patina of the corporal's boots, saw Adam and Eve in the golden depths.”(Chapter 2) This is a biblical allusion to Adam and Eve, the mother and father of humanity in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Also, the raven flying could represent her disturbed ideas flourishing due to her “vaulting ambition” but also her downfall as the raven lands due to the lack of consideration and thought into her and her husband’s plans. Alternatively, the ‘hoarse’ sound produced by the bird could be seen as the foretelling of King Duncan’s death. This could also be seen as disturbed as it was thought to be against the will of God to commit such a heinous crime against the ruler of your country.…

Fairy tales are a source of wonder and awe for children of all ages. Every culture all around the world has favorite assorted fairy tales and fables that help herd children into young adults. As those children grow into adults, often times those stories stay with the adults that were once so affected by these tales. Once on her chair, she starts to let her feelings flow through her, at first, there is sadness and mourning, but later on she realizes that she doesn’t feel all that bad about her husband passing away, instead, she feels happy and rejoiced, and starts to look forwards to those days she had dreaded the day before. “She breathed a quick prayer that life might be long. It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long.” She looks out of the open window in her room and sees the springtime in its bloom, with birds flying about, sparrows singing softly, patches of clear blue sky showing here and there. All of these are symbols for hope and freedom. Birds are creatures without boundaries, without limits and unbound to the ground, which we could take to mean marriage. She now feels like a bird, able to fly off into the sky, leaving her grounding marriage behind. It is basically a symbol of freedom and hope for the future. This also tells us that her marriage, even though it wasn’t a violent and unloving marriage was an oppressive one. ” She knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead.” And “And yet she had loved him—sometimes. Often she had not. What did it matter!” These two excerpts really help us understand…
