“A busy vibrant, goal-oriented woman is so much attractive than a woman who waits around for a man to validate her existence” (Hale). One such woman, author Jenna Price, wrote “Marry down: why more women are doing it,” published in 2017 in the Sydney Morning Herald, and she argues ” it is a truth universally acknowledged that a single woman in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a husband”. The author raises some interesting points, but her argument has several fundamental problems: Price begins building her argument with personal facts and sources, using rhetorical appeals.…

In the Scarlett Letter by Hawthorn, public humiliation is used as a form of punishment. In that place and time period, the seventeenth century, Puritanical Boston, Massachusettes, this form of punishment was quite common. There was no separation of church and state at that time and since Puritan beliefs were based on good versus evil, it was a common practice to humiliate, chastise, and berate people as a scare tactic to keep order. Fast forward to the Twenty First Century. We clearly have seperation of church and state. People are not allowed to be discriminated against in any way, shape or form. We have constitutional rights that allow for freedom of speech. Our society ,in this country,…

Women have always been judged, we have been called sensitive, emotional, vulnerable, pathetic, sentimental, and, many other labels invented by society. I mean, is being sentimental a bad thing? No, it’s not, it’s completely normal to have emotions, everyone has emotions. Mary Anne Bell symbolizes how women are capable of being part of a war and finding interest in subjects in which society would consider “Only meant for men”. Tim O’Brien is not a feminist, I believe that he is making an argument discussing how women should be treated equally as men, no gender labels nor excuses. O'Brien says, “If Mary was a man it wouldn't be a big deal”. No matter what gender soldiers are they lose their innocence. War changes soldiers into completely different people and damages them mentally even causing them to commit suicide.…

Seeing “Culturally Impactful Entertainment Image” in the choices for the final project, I almost immediately knew what I wanted to analyze! Beyoncé’s sixth solo album “Lemonade” dropped exclusively on Tidal on April 23, 2016. Being that “Lemonade” technically classifies as a short film, I decided to focus on one portion out of the twelve tracks. The third track “Don’t Hurt Yourself” from the “Anger” segment is a powerful reminder to society which is displayed in a manner where the underlying message can easily become lost. Due to the controversial lyrics, a clip of Political figure Malcom Ex was overlooked in favor of Beyonce’s personal life. Often when it comes to race, the media chooses to purposely ignore the conversation that is prompted by such powerful imagery. People accuse Beyonce of being a…
