The American Dream is often connected with people who have astonishing dreams and who managed to actually live out such dreams. For almost all Americans, this entails earning a college degree, gaining a good job, buying a house, and starting a family. Just like Americans born here, immigrants dream for a hope of a better life. Immigrants have different motives for coming to America. As Yuliya Sandler, an immigrant from Ukraine in the late ‘90s, said, “One of the main reasons [to come to this country] was for the religious freedom” because that was hard to have in Ukraine at that time. Also, to have more political freedom, to have better opportunities and to have a great job. No matter the reason, immigrants risk everything for a chance to pursue the American Dream. The history of the American Dream was first publicized in 1931. It was apparently created by historian James Truslow Adams in his book The Epic of America. Today’s American Dream is being able to graduate from college with little debt, find a job that one is good at and has good pay, be able to pay for health insurance, and still live a comfortable life. Yuliya Sandler achieved her dream, as she said, “I got married to a Russian Jew and now am a proud mom of two. I also applied to and got into Brooklyn College and studied business and received my second bachelors degree.” With hard work anyone could accomplish their dreams.
