Imagine losing your best friend, dog, grandmother and sister in all one year. Junior, the main character in The absolutely true diary of a part time indian by Sherman Alexie overcame this, and more! Junior, the main character, has to also face all the problems of a modern day teenager, while being the only Indian at school, the only Indian who goes to a white school at home, and home being a entire 22 miles from school. Junior endures many things, while in poverty and sadness, which then enables him to help him get through the rest of his life, tougher and more confident of what he can do. Even by his best friend, Rowdy, bullies him even though he asked him to come with him. He’s always been bullied, but never by Rowdy. They were both born with mental issues, Rowdy was always angry and Junior was born with too much cerebrospinal fluid on his brain. The extra cerebrospinal fluid caused him to have a big head, big feet and skinny. He also had a stutter and a lisp. Right after he switches, he gets bullied at school and at home. There was just the right of each so you cannot decide what the main topic was, but if I had to choose, it would be comedy. What kept this book interesting was that whenever you though he would stop getting beat up, something big happens and it starts all over again. There were so many ups and downs and that is what makes this book keep you up all night. I loved this book because it wasn’t just serious, it also made you laugh. Whenever there was a grim part, Sherman Alexie would throw in a joke. For instance, Junior’s Grandmother has just passed away, and he makes it sad, but right as you think that the book has changed, he adds in a joke like this; “Grandparents are supposed to die first, but they’re supposed to die of old age.
