Thanksgiving At John's Home-Personal Narrative
I'm walking to my friend John's house to celebrate Thanksgiving with him and his family. John and I became a very good friend since the first day of my schooling at New York City. It's amusing that John accepted me as his friend at a time when I didn't even understand a single word he would say to me and I wasn't able to express that how much I appreciate his help to cop this new environment and that his help is actually helping me to make this Big city as my home. John, as I would describe him, is a Chinese looking guy with long hair, big nose and the great sense of humor. Without the help of John, I would never be able to get learn this language, make friends and understand the culture of New york City. Two months ago before meeting …show more content…
I still remember how John would teach me few slang words such as "wassup man!" But at the same time, he would warn me to not to use these words with my teachers. Every day after school, John would stay with me for an hour to teach me how to speak like him. He would tell me, "If you can't speak to me, people would make fun of you as they did to me when I first came to this school." I realized the importance of learning this unfamiliar language. I knew that it's important for me to understand the language in order to feel belonging in this new environment. Although I knew few words to communicate, but people would put an effort to understand these words since I couldn’t translate them into clear English and would just ask john instead, "Yo John what this kid tryna say?!" I would try to use the word tryna, even after going home, I would try to find it’s meaning. Not being able to find the definition “tryna”, next day, I asked john and he told me that it means to "Trying to". After a few months, when John was successful in making me hold a regular conversation, My sense of feeling different from my classmates started to go away. I started to feel more accepted in my school. I started to feel that I belong to this new city as I was able to interact with people. Through gaining the skills of speaking in English from John, I was successful in my first approach to get fit into

Throughout my life I have encountered many circumstances that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I attended school in Mexico all the way to second grade. In the summer of 2006 I moved to Cumming, Georgia. It was the hardest thing to do because I left everything that I care the most about. We lived in a trailer which was not the nicest place and in the middle of the forest. I started school at the beginning of August. I had always loved school so I was so excited for the first day. I knew it was going to be hard because I would have to conquer so many obstacles on the way. At this time the only English I knew was probably counting from one to ten and some of the colors. My Father knew some…

Recently I had the opportunity to visit Dickie Brennan’s Bourbon House located at 144 Bourbon Street for my grandfather’s 73rd birthday luncheon celebration. My mother selected this restaurant for its great seafood and authentic New Orleans dishes. She had booked a reservation for a party of seven, and this was my first time at the establishment. I thought it was going to be another French quarter hole in the wall restaurant with concrete floors and shoddy decor; however, I was pleasantly surprised.…

My parents, like countless immigrants, relocated my family of five in pursuit of the highly sought after “American Dream.” The excitement quickly wore off once I was confronted with the realization that we will now be residing in a one bedroom, one bathroom basement apartment in Brooklyn, New York. While my parents attempted to provide for my brothers and me, I undertook the task of mastering the English language. In contrast to my classmates, my learning recommenced after school; I spent countless hours reviewing index cards struggling to obtain a grasp of the English language. For added support I attended an English as a second language class, where I received one on one attention. The alienation from the classmates that surpassed me with ease triggered feelings of inadequacy; this only fueled my determination to succeed.…

As I Easter came upon us, I knew my Grandpa John would be in town. My Grandpa John is 69 years old, and has experienced many different social issues during his life, so I decided to interview him. In his prime, my grandpa served in the military which allowed him to move often around the United States, and the world. I knew he had a lot of experience due to the military, and he was quite the storyteller. I knew it would be easy to talk to him about different social issues throughout his life. As we sat down we talked about many things, but the two ideas that really stuck out to me were the Vietnam War and the Space Race.…

Language was not always easy to speak, write, and understand when I first moved here from India. Understanding two different culture shocks from Indian culture and American culture, was surely one of the toughest part about moving to the United States was. Everything was very different from my skin color to the way I spoke English. Every time I passed by people in the hallway, everyone would stare at me because they all knew about “the new girl from India.” Slowly as months passed by I started realizing the difference in culture, lifestyle, and behavior. Looking back before I moved to the US, growing up with a single parent impacted my view in society. My mom always taught me to be the hardest working person in the room. She always told me…

Thanksgiving is considered by many as being the worse meal of the year. Why? Because of the extreme overload of high-starch carbs that trigger blood sugar spikes for so many people. Just think of it. Pumpkin pie with a scoop or two of ice cream, corn bread stuffing, mashed potatoes, sugar-laden cranberry sauce and green bean casserole, that's why.…

My Thanksgiving break was pretty good. On Thanksgiving, I went to Indiana to my cousins' house. It was a two-hour drive, so it wasn't that long. All of my cousins are older than me- literally, all of my cousins even from I don't know where. The only people younger than me are my siblings so I'm not the youngest of ALL the people. Anyways, we had eaten all of the thanksgiving things you can possibly eat. I loved thanksgiving this year and I can't wait next year.…

English is not my first language. In fact, I didn’t learn it well enough to have a conversation until I was about 10 years old. I remember the embarrassment of being new to a country I called home after living in Mexico for years. Things changed quickly the first day of 8th grade. I remember being energetically greeted by a slender athletic man in his fifties in a muggy summer morning. The hum of the air conditioning as welcome sound as we found our seats in this room that smelled of being closed the last few months. His name was Mr. Goodman and he was, by most accounts, an “asshole.” This was a descriptor of which he was proud. Even the other faculty thought so. He was a strange man, but he had his reasons. Surprisingly, he was also one of the best teacher’s I’ve encountered to this day. He had a brutally visceral way of making you care about learning. His class would soon change the way I spoke English for the rest of my life.…

This time was different, firstly because Cecilia my partner was not attending to the teaching course with me, and this new situation made me feel a little incomplete and scared, but I had a new good classmate Maria Jose. I can say that the practices were good. Moreover, Mj is a great partner and she had the creative part in our pair. The first day we went to observed the group, I have to admit that I felt scared because the group was very noisy, also I had the feeling that the teacher cannot controlled them, but I was wrong. After we finished our first observation class M.J and I discussed about it. Even though, we had different point of views, this made me feel a little more relaxed. During the first week of observation we had the possibility to chat with the students and asked them about what they knew about English, and for my surprise almost all of them knew the language, I need to mention that there were some advanced students, and these students helped their classmates. This group in my opinion was not just classmates, they were very friendly with each other, and this reassured me that it was a very good group. However, we had certain difficulties to explain one topic. We had to use our mother tongue in order for them to understand what we wanted the class to know, this moment put me a little gloomy because I could see in their faces that they did not understand, even though I thought I…
