Thank You Ma'am By : Langston Hughes

1) "She was a large woman with a large purse that had everything in it but a hammer and nails." The description of Mrs. Jones' purse written out by Hughes is symbolically portrayed in different ways. The texts states that the purse Mrs. Jones was carrying around had everything in it but a hammer and nails. What is interesting about this phrase is the way it is used. Symbolically the purse has more meaning than how it physically sounds. In my opinion, I found this purse to be the base line of the story. The purse has everything in it except a hammer and nails.
Well, the way the author used the sentence and the way the story is designed, I believe the purse is symbolically more than just a purse. How the purse has everything in it, I think that the emotional, gratitude part of the story is meant.
When the author mentioned that everything was there but the hammer and nails, I believe the author is referring the hammer and nails as the harsh attitude and disgrace Mrs. Jones might have. The purse is almost the way of describing Mrs.
Jones and her acts of sympathy, compassion, forgiveness, patience and sincerity she has to offer throughout the story.

2) Mrs Jones is a woman of modest income. Three pieces from the text that show it: " The boy could hear other roomers laughing and talking in the large house" I found that an interesting piece to be given as an example that Mrs. Jones is one with a modest income. With that piece of text, many assumptions could be made. It shows that Mrs. Jones does not live alone so possibly, she could be renting out the space in her house, to make a benefit of all the rooms with a little added money. As well, she could also be living in an old age home, which is cheaper than owning a house alone. The second point: Mrs. Jones' job. "As they ate, she told him about her job in a hotel beauty shop that stayed open late, what the work was like" I found this section also having a

Readers will quickly find themselves completely immersed in “The Faery Handbag”. The imagery used in this story is incredible. Leave it to Kelly Links, the author, to use her extraordinary imagery. The story begins with a girl named Genevieve with her boyfriend in a place called the Garment District. “The Garment District is a place is Boston where old clothes go to die.” (Link). The author is trying to describe this place like a donations store for clothing items that don’t fit, or are too ragged. Genevieve’s grandmother, Zofia, is a wise old woman who always carries an odd handbag around with her. Nobody knows what magic the handbag truly holds. Genevieve always enjoys going to her grandmother’s house to listen to her stories, stories that…

    | Rat’s form of storytelling referenced in this quote exemplifies one prevalent theme throughout the novel: technicalities are not always as important as bringing your audience to feel and experience the same truth of emotion as the event itself. Pieces of a story such as small details or entire parts can be changed while keeping the original intent of its creation perfectly intact, so long as the story was intended to convey a certain caliber of feeling or importance.…

Hale and Mrs. Peters become the two main characters during their investigation, Mrs. Hale recalls the good times of Mrs. Wright’s life. There was once a time when she was known as Minnie Foster. Minnie “used to wear pretty clothes and be lively-singing in the choir (778).” Before marriage, Minnie was an upbeat girl who took part in her community, but now, she does not even take part of the Ladies Aid. Unfortunately, once she committed to a marriage with Mr. Wright, Minnie changed her way of being, and it was not a good change for her persona. Her house was disheveled with unwashed things and she was not properly kept herself which shows to prove that she is not the lively girl she once was. She became a more reserved woman and seemed to not care about anything, though she was trying her best to survive by keeping busying with her…

The shabbiness of the wallet, referred to, in which she finds the fifteen dollars is a symbol of her impoverished life. When she finds the fifteen dollars it gives her a feeling of importance which “she had not enjoyed for years.” (Chopin, Vogue 7, 1897) When she first purchases the silk stockings she puts them into what is described as her “shabby old shopping bag” (Chopin vogue 7, 1897) which could symbolize luxury in poverty and when she trades her cotton stockings for the silk pair it gives her a sense of freedom, as if she’s breaking free of her current life poverty. She then proceeds to buy a new pair of shoes and be fitted for a pair of gloves which is a nod to the more comfortable and luxurious lifestyle she had been a part of…
