Tension In Soldier's Home
The research topic I chose, is the struggle a soldier may endure when trying to conform back to society after being away at war. Ernest Hemingway enlisted in the military shortly after graduating from High School in 1918 and was severely wounded before coming back home. In the short story “Soldier’s Home” by Ernest Hemingway the character Krebs has enlisted in the military also. When Krebs arrived back home in the United States, he struggled with everyday life and trying to fit back into society. The focus of my research will be the strain that war can have on a soldier both mentally and physically. Soldiers return home after witnessing their own men get killed and tortured while having to worry about their own safety this eventually has to take a mental toll on them. …show more content…

Ernest Hemingway in “ Soldier’s Home” represents the life of Harold Krebs as an example of the effects on people and communities as well as a country as a whole caused by wars. There appears to be a blatant lack of respect for the main character from family and friends. This lack of respect is shown through the author’s discussion of a lack of empathy, confidence, and lack of placement. Hemingway shows the reader a view of the returning soldier from war and his clear displacement from “home.”…

Fictional characters are a central part of short stories that presents a broader aspect into the work itself. In an effort to do so, the author's use of many literary devices are essential in context such as the strong uses of imagery and characterizations; both having a significant influence that can set the overall tone of the story and allows readers to foreshadow the outcome. Other literary devices that are widely found are the conflict(s) between one or multiple characters and the symbolism of objects, animals, and other representations. "A Sorrowful Woman" by Gail Godwin, "A & P" by John Updike, and "Soldier's Home" by Ernest Hemingway are three selected short stories that contain the author's success with the strong usage of literary terms.…

Many authors have written war stories and about the effects of war on a person. Two of these writers are Tim O'Brian and Ernest Hemingway. O'Brian wrote "How to Tell a True War Story"; and Hemingway wrote a short story called "Soldier's Home". Both of these stories illustrate to the reader just what war can do to an average person and what, during war, made the person change. The stories are alike in many respects due to the fact that both authors served time in the army; O'Brian in the Vietnam War and Hemingway in WWI. However, the stories do have differences due to the slightly different themes and also the different writing techniques of the authors.…

Ernest Hemingway’s “Soldier’s Home” is a tremendous story about a young soldier’s battle to find himself after returning from the war. In this story, Hemingway’s character Krebs leaves for the war as a young upscale college student and returns a couple of years later out of touch with society and lost within himself. The main conflict in the story is the struggle in which Krebs faces as he tries to rediscover where he belongs not only in the world, but also inside himself.…

After this Hemingway returned again to enlist in the Italian infantry. He served in the infantry on the Austrian front until the war ended. Hemingway was part of a unique experience. Veterans of World War I were the only people who understood the chaos and monstrosity that took place overseas because they experienced it first hand. This is not something easily communicated to those who have not served in the war. Hemingway uses his novels, specifically The Sun Also Rises, to show the post-war effects on mental and physical health.…
