Ten Commandments Of The Covenant

A covenant is a contract in which promises are made between two parties. These contracts were normally made between two parties that contained a powerful ruler promising protection to a ruler of less power resulting in fulfilling expectations in the future. In the old testament, a covenant was made in Canaan between God and Abraham. God was the powerful ruler while Abraham was the less powerful ruler of the covenant. The agreement was one day the land of Canaan would be the land of Abraham’s unborn child and all of his descendants. God would also bless those who blessed Abraham and his descendants but curse those who also cursed them. This would only happen if Abraham obeyed God’s commands. God showed his guarantee on his part of the covenant by having a ceremonial splitting of animals and Abraham showed his guarantee on his part of the covenant by obeying God
Because Abraham was obedient, his soon Isaac and Isaac’s son Jacob would too make covenants with God. Centuries later, Moses made a covenant with God on behalf of the Israelites. Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and into the promised land- Canaan. God made a covenant with Moses on top of Mount Sinai sending the ten commandments that the Israelites had to follow. The ten commandments were a set of duties how to worship God and how to treat one another. Although, the Israelites did not follow the ten commandments when they melted gold to create an idol being a golden calf. The Israelites did this after Moses left the mountains. The second commandment states, “You shall make no idols”. Therefore, they went against God’s commands. After returning to the mountains, Moses broke the tablet of the ten commandments out of anger and put 3,000 to death with the help of the Israelites who did not go against the word of God.
