Poe’s eerie stories In the narrative poem “The Raven” and the short story “Tell-Tale both by Edgar Allan Poe used literary devices to create a similar tone although the tone are some what different. “The Raven” is about a man who lost his lover, he got really sad. In the middle of the night the narrator sat down and read a book. The narrator heard someone knock on his door, he opened the door and it was a raven knocking on his chamber door. The raven kept saying “Nevermore”.The raven made the narrator go crazy because the raven wouldn't stop saying “Nevermore”. First, both narrators are scared of an”evil” eye. In The Raven the narrator is scared of the bird’s eye however, in the Tell-Tale Heart the narrator is scared of the old man’s eye. We can tell both narrators are scared of the eye by reading the middle stanzas of the narrative poem and the short story. Then, both narrators have fear and distress. In the Tell-Tale Heart we can tell the narrator had fear and distress in the middle of the short story where he says he stays up at night to watch the old man sleep, he has fear of getting caught. Last, both use internal rhyme to make things more confusing. Internal rhyme happens in most of the narrative poem and the short story. In conclusion,both The Raven and Tell-Tale Heart use literary devices to create a tone. Both narrators are crazy except in The Tell-Tale Heart the narrator was crazy since the beginning of the short story. In The Raven the author uses metaphors, internal rhyme and alliteration to make the poem a bit more interesting and gives the reader the feeling of reading more.
