Branch Type: Combat Arms Birthday: The Army first used light aircraft for artillery forward observation and reconnaissance in June 1942. Following the establishment of the US Air Force as a separate service in 1947, the Army began to further develop its own aviation assets (light planes and rotary wing aircraft) in support of ground operations. The Korean War gave this drive impetus, and the war in Vietnam saw its fruition, as Army aviation units performed a variety of missions, including reconnaissance, transport, and fire support. After the war in Vietnam, the role of armed helicopters as tank destroyers received new emphasis. In recognition of the grown importance of aviation in Army doctrine and operations, Aviation became a separate branch on 12 April 1983. Mission Statement: The mission of Army Aviation is to find, fix, and destroy the enemy through fire and maneuver; and to provide combat, combat service and combat service support in coordinated operations as an integral member of the combined arms team.…

    F-35 Joint Strike Fighter

Since the beginning of World War I, key military analysts have begun to realize the importance of airpower over the battlefield. It has been said throughout the years that “he who controls the air, also controls the battlefield”. Though some have disputed this statement, the truth has always been proven to analysts after the war when evaluations can be made. The three branches of military that currently use fighter/bomber aircraft are the Air Force, Navy, and Marines. During the military’s vast aviation history, all three branches of service have used separate aircraft. In his book “Ultimate Fighter”, Bill Sweetman, an experienced aviation journalist, states that “if there was one element of Joint Advanced Strike Technology that aroused skepticism, it was the idea that one aircraft could work for every service” (42). That is exactly what the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program hopes to accomplish, but can it? The F-35 is attempting to do what many have failed at previously: meet the specific needs and requirements of all three service branches, incorporate years of compiled information into state-of-the-art equipment, and accomplish all this at a very competitive price.…

Since appearance of first aircraft its first use was determined as transportation vehicle that can provide variety of options such as materiel or personnel deployment in any direction and any area on the globe. This ability was saved and explored until our days. Thus, one of the key characteristic of the U.S. Air Force became its airlift capability. Saying that, the Air Force became essential element in joint military operation supporting one of the joint functions such as sustainment. Sustainment gives necessary ability to joint forces to maintain and prolong operations until mission accomplished. My keenness to be involved with aircraft took a definite shape in the form of my wanting to become an astronaut or be involved in Aerospace Engineering. Working in an organisation like NASA as an Aerospace Engineer became my ambition for life. Since then I have been enthusiastic about gaining all kinds of knowledge regarding aviation and aerospace engineering. I also visited ISRO, the Indian Space Research Organisation, the Indian equivalent of NASA, located in Sriharikota, a place in the southern part of India. Though there was a great deal of difference in the technology used in the space centres in the US and in India, I was able to learn a great deal about Chandarayan, the first successful mission constructed by an Indian as the project director MylswamyAnnadurai gave a detailed explanation about it.…

Shortly after the first flight, wars broke out across the world. Immediately engineers tried to find a way to get an edge in a combat situation. This edge came in the way of aerial combat support for the troops on the ground. As the technology improved, the design, strength, and functionality of combat aircraft has improved. From the P-40 Warhawk, to the P-51 Mustang, to the F-4 Phantom, to the F-14 Tomcat, F-15 Strike Eagle, and F-16 Viper, the technology improved time and again, making air superiority a key part of American warfare.…

    Nucor at a Crossroads

On December 7, 1986, F. Kenneth Iverson, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Nucor Corporation, awaited a delegation from SMS Schloemann-Siemag, a leading West German supplier of steelmaking equipment, at his company’s headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. Iverson had to decide whether to commit Nucor to a new steel mill that would commercialize thinslab casting technology developed by SMS. Preliminary estimates indicated that the mill would cost $280 million, and that start-up expenses and working capital of $30 million each would push the total cost to $340 million, or nearly as much as Nucor’s net worth. Successful commercialization of thin-slab casting would let Nucor enter the flat sheet segment that accounted for half the U.S. market for steel. SMS’s compact strip production (CSP) process was, however, just one of several competing, commercially unproven thin-slab casting technologies, all of which might be leapfrogged by the turn of the century. As Iverson wrestled with these trade-offs, he reviewed the state of competition in the U.S. steel industry in general and Nucor’s position within it in particular.…
