Teenagers Work Can Have Downsides By Jerald G Bachman Summary
In the article “Teenagers’ Work Can Have Downsides” by Jerald G. Bachman, questions the idea of High School Teens being employed. The article states that High School students who work long hours in jobs during the school year tend to have poor academic success. These students are said to have behavioral problems, acts of delinquency and drug use. These results spark the question “Should Teens Work?”

In my opinion, I say that teenagers should be allowed to work mainly because it would open the opportunity for the individual to be able to become responsible. These individuals will learn that it isn’t easy to work and do good in school. They have to stay focused because all the money they earn can either go to college or they will just spend it and then they will get into the habit of spending their money, just because they have money. These students need to get little

Another positive is that the money they earn can go to college or just help out in general. There has been proof that college completion rates are highest among those who worked 15, 10 or less hours a week during the school year. This proves that having a job while you are in high school but also not overwhelming yourself is a good and advantageous opportunity. You also have to be able to maintain the job as in hours. It isn’t a good idea to exceed the number of 15 hours a week.
Even Though there are negatives about having a job during the school year whilst in high school, there are positives. The max hours recommended to work which is 15 should not be exceeded. A job can only prepare and provide so many skills for an individual. I think it would be advantageous to have a job whilst a high school teen. The money earned can really help out and also the skills you’ll obtain from the job can help you get a job in the future. Overall Teens should be allowed to

It's not common to see teens in the work field nowadays. Many blame the job market for this, as they claim: "They don't produce jobs for students anymore". However, in the passage "WHY MORE TEENAGERS AND COLLEGE STUDENTS NEED TO WORK WHILE IN SCHOOL" by Jeffrey J. Selingo, he attempts to convince readers why college and high school students should be working during the school year. Jeffrey uses a handful of powerful claims backed up by appealing evidence to shut down the stereotypical claim that the job market is to blame for why these students don't have correct work ethics. Students would rather pay for loans than take a job for a general and truthful claim.…

Some of the research articles we found included people from both sides. The first article included places like McDonalds where you start out at the bottom and work your way up the food chain. Although, this happening is rare, you learn valuable skills like, time management, being honest and being dependable. The second article we read opposed the idea of high school students working. This author argued that high school students can only get jobs that do not require any skills or creativity and you should spend your time focusing on the important thing, school.…

As a student who works anywhere from 24-48 hours in a week, working while going to school is a hard task to tackle. I have had a job since I was 15 years old; which means that I have been going to school and working for over 3 years now. Working while in school has taught me responsibility such as meeting the deadlines for an assignment after working a 12-hour shift. Working and going to school is not also as easy as it seems; I had to have a good school record so I could get out of school early each day to go to work. It causes a lot of stress on me, but it helps me to get to where I need to be.…

It gives you extra money and who doesn't love that. You can pay off your debt so when you graduate you have nothing to pay back when you're ready to start your career. You will also have a list of reference at your disposal, for example I will have over a dozen nurses that would give me an outstanding reference. You will build up job experience, so you know what to do in the career field of your choice. You will also have a jump on people that are fresh out of school with no exp. This experience will put you ahead of your peers and the people you are competing with for the job. Jobs after college will be easier to get, for example if I wanted to get a job at HRMC they would most likely hire me before others because of my experience and because I’ve worked there and know how things are run and from working their they would pay for or help pay for my school work. In the end working while in college is one of the best things you could do for your future. I can’t emphasize that enough. Even if it’s only a few days out of the month or on weekends. Don’t be lazy and embrace your future and take…

20% of teenagers make their own money, and a majority of these teenagers work 40 hours a week. The minimum wage in Virginia is $7.25, and teenagers also get a paycheck at the end of every week. So that means if teenagers worked 8 hours a day for five days a week they would earn $290 every week. Imagine if one could earn that kind of money, think of the things that person could accomplish with the amount of money they are making. They could buy clothes, buy a brand new cellular device, or even save up to buy a car.…

I think the idea that many places do not hire because of no experience in a particular field such as a cashier (for most teenagers) is just unreasonable. When a student becomes employed, they can save the money that they earned, which can benefit for their future education. To further explain, the interview “ Paying for College without Loans, Scholarships or Looting your Parents’ Retirement” by Steinburg, Jacques and Mr. Zac Bissonnette tells the reader how “ Saves $6 per hour of that throughout high school will have 24,960 in savings,”(Bissonette 13). This proves to show that just with saving a little bit of money, can help the student pay off college easily. Others may argue that working during high school can distract a student from their work, but the same article leads a different direction with that statement. For example, it states how “college student who were employed...higher average GPA (2.72) than those who werent working,” (Bissonette 13).The statistics clearly show that when a student works during school it motivates them try harder at school. Overall, working while being in high school allows the student to not be in such a high…

It is fairly easy to save money and it becomes easier to save once you get a job. “A high school student who works twenty hours per week (more during the summer, less during school year) and saves $6 per hour of that throughout high school will save $24,960 in savings by the time he starts college (Steinberg 13).” Working may help you get new interests and may inspire those who are confused about what you want to do. Many students have a belief their grades will drop if they work but a 1993 survey proves otherwise. “A 1993 study published in the Journal of Student Financial Aid found that college students who were employed actually had a slightly higher average GPA (2.72) than those who weren't working (2.69) (Steinberg 13).” Meaning those who decide to work during school had slightly higher scores than those who did not. Just like the other 2 solutions this one has a downside that matches up the benefits as well. To begin signing applications and receiving a call back for an interview takes lots of time mainly the waiting for a call back takes most of the time. Another downside is that you may not be able to get a job for a while it takes a long time for people to even get a call back. Mainly being there is no guarantee you will receive a job.…
