teenagers
Teenagers are a big subject of today’s media. We hear about them on the radio while we’re driving and on the TV at home. The media represents teenagers in a way that comes across as them being reckless alcoholics who are breaking the law. This is not always the case with the youth of today. There are many well-behaved teenagers out there. The following quote from Plato, I believe is false “What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them” – Plato.

As in past generations, today’s young people are often imagined as out of control deviants in need of discipline or as highly vulnerable victims susceptible to outside corrupting influences. As it turns out, today’s youth are not the first to be characterised as self centred, out of control and disrespectful. Teenagers are not the first to be viewed as society’s moral decay. Every generation says that in their day they were better behaved than the generation after them. Each of them, from hippies to gothic teenagers to punks, has or will complain, that “in my day people were more moral and young people respected their elders”

The news program “A Current Affair” covered a story about young teenage girls getting cosmetic surgery, this news report was very one sided. The program only showed us a small group of teenage girls who where not completely happy with their body and the way they look. Most teenage girls care about the way they look and want the perfect body, but they don’t just jump into getting surgery to change that. Firstly, it’s the medias representation of teenage girls in the modern world that is over exaggerated, and secondly only a small number of girls would actually go through with a really painful and money draining operation like the ones that are shown on TV programs.

Most teenagers live in families were they have to act responsibly and are taught to show respect to adults and others around them. Most teenagers do their chores and look after their younger siblings. The media play’s a big role in the representation of groups of people in society, especially teenagers. A lot of people find it intriguing when they see teenagers on the news getting up to no good. Many news reports are based on young people and how they wander the streets and cause riots. Most young people are blamed for everything negative that goes on in the community, when adults play a big role in this as well. Most teenagers are involved in the community and enjoy helping out. Not all young people are rebellious, alcoholics that don’t have a future.

Around 70% of teenagers are actively involved in community sporting and recreation groups. I believe that young people that belong to outside of school extra-curricular activities from football to dancing are more down to earth and responsible. Young people belonging to sporting clubs, not only have a responsible role at home, but also have an even more responsible role to their sporting club. Belonging to a sporting club, means you are counted on to be reliable and loyal. Each teenager in that sporting club has the role of being a leader. Another good thing about young people belonging to a sporting club, is that they are more concentrated on achieving in their sport whereas their friends go out partying every weekend. Being involved with a sporting club makes you more aware of these things and you’re not only doing what you enjoy but also getting the exercise you need to stay fit and healthy.

It seems that every generation thinks that the next is more out of control and morally corrupt than they were. This has been said throughout history going back 1000’s of years, an example of this is from the quote from Plato and this quote was from the 4th Century! All of today’s youth can’t be generalised into a one ball, sure there are some that are out of control but that has always been the case. People born in the 70’s would have been frowned upon by people born in the 30’s, this is how it is and always will be. Times change and people change and basically there is nothing we can do about this.

“Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they never failed to imitate them”. This is a quote from James Baldwin.

Another reason why teenagers should stay away from cosmetic surgery is because it is a very costly expenditure. Many people are drawn into the lure of looking like unrealistic billboard model with no concern of the price, which could ultimately be his or her life. What does it cost to be beautiful in todays society? It seems as if there is a cosmetic surgery procedure for everyone out there. There is rhinoplasty for a person with a nose like Squidard, an otoplasty done for one with ears that resemble Dumbo, cheek implants, thigh lifts, male breast reductions, eyelid surgeries, and the list goes on. Times magazine reports that 34,000,000 teenagers do not like their chins, 70,000,000 teenagers dislike their noses, and 6,000,000 do not like their ears. The price costs on these surgeries as not only financial, but also emotional, especially in a young teenager. Your Plastic Surgery Guide states that the average abdominoplasty, tummy tuck, can cost as high as $5,130 and rhinoplasty, a nose job, buttock augmentation or a breast augmentation can cost an average of $4,052 for each procedure to be preformed. The cosmetic surgery world is a rapidly growing business, adding new operations each year. It is said that, “half of patients who have undergone cosmetic surgery have had numerous procedures done in less than one year afterwards” (Alderman). Cosmetic surgery has become very addictive. It can be compared to gambling. It is hard to stop once one have already begun and is a fast way to loose money. An emotional cost comes with cosmetic surgery as well. It is said by Kids Health that teenagers have become dissatisfied with their results on multiple occasions, and results in another surgery to fix the previous one, and another to fix that one, and the cycle repeats. Many people are drawn into the lure of looking like unrealistic billboard model with no concern of the price, which could be their life. With the prices as high as they are, the high standards of beauty, and…

Sometimes a teenager is so insecure about their body image that it can be considered a mental condition. They may undergo depression and hate themselves for the way they look. Having plastic surgery may help them overcome their insecurities, and help them be confident. They may be able to do many things that they were afraid of doing before. However, should plastic surgery be so reliant among teens? Every human is made different and there is no absolute definition of “beautiful”. For everyone it is different. People think that there’s one idea of beauty, but as they say, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” People are so influenced by social media and the internet that they seem to have a set idea on what “beautiful” is. One skill that a person should learn in life, is to overcome problems. Insecurities are insecurities, and you’ll always have them. You shouldn’t be thinking about how you can fix the Insecurity, you should be thinking about how you can fix yourself. Fix yourself into overcoming your insecurities and into loving the way you look. Admiring your imperfections, not altering them through plastic surgery. It is unhealthy for your body, and your mind. I believe it should be avoided all…

Most parents instill the value of self-respect in their child at an early age, only to let the media drain it out of them. The parents who see what such media is doing to their child will attempt to fix it as soon as it occur. The media is everywhere and preys upon teens. A teenager is easily influenced by another teen let along half of the world. It’s not as if the teen don’t know those things will lower his or her self-respect. It’s not easy for a teenage girl to her favorite celebrity getting attention because of her revealing clothes, it’s never easy for a teenage guy to look on Facebook to see all of the people he look up to constantly post pictures throwing up gang signs, I’m sure it wouldn’t be easy listening to the radio and songs talk about easing your mind with drugs and alcohol. I’m certain that it wouldn’t be every song, social network or television show that’s steering teens wrong, but I’m convinced that most of them are persuading actions that will lower teens self-respect…

First of all, the primary source uses many words to describe adults’ actions to indicate the oppression teenagers suffered right now. Evidence like “clean up your looks,” “watch all the things you do,” “got methods of keeping you clean” and “rip up your heads” clearly show what kind of oppression teenagers have and what they need to resist. Adults are trying to make teenagers fit the “good standards” created by them. Good teenagers should be innocent, be obedient, study hard and so on. What’s more, adults are ready to find out teenagers’ mistakes at any time so that they could guide teenagers to what they thought is the correct way. They also want to make teenagers believe that the adults’ words are all right. Teenagers who live in such environment…

Historically representations of teenagers have been varied in the media but especially more within recent years teenagers have been represented more negatively. From the British television drama website (www.itvdrama.blogspot.com ) I was able to find out that in the past teenagers were represented as obedient, conforming young people who were un-sexualized and unsusceptible to the negatives of the world. It stated that as time progressed the representation of teenagers became more realistic. They became louder, expressive, individual, outgoing and sexually aware. Teenagers are seen as always being up to no good and just causing trouble and being involved in crime, sexual activity and drugs. Especially in British media, teenagers are represented as being apart of gangs and being labelled ‘yobs’. Steven Drizen states on the website www.thinkexist.com, “The overwhelming majority of juveniles…

It isn’t just teenagers that are stereotyping, parents are stereotyping teens, they are so afraid of us mucking up that they don’t trust you and assume that you are going to mess up, get pregnant, do drugs, or shoplift, not every teenager is like that, I’m not, "Watch out! - I am from the evil and hated generation. Believe it or not, not every single teenager around my age goes around beating up people and smashing up cars. Can you seriously claim that today's youth are that much worse than the mods and rockers of the former generation? My generation never gets a positive thing said about them - GCSEs for example - we do better than the past generation and the courses must be getting easier - obviously. Is it really any wonder then certain youths rebel?"…

When you think of people who get cosmetic surgery, you instantly think of adults. What we don’t really know is how many teenagers get cosmetic surgery a year. A study in 2012 found that just 236,000 procedures were done on patients between thirteen and nineteen (Zuckerman 1). A major concern for those teens undergoing surgery is that they are still maturing and there body is growing, this would likely change their body image issues (1). As one study found that body image satisfaction did improve after plastic surgery, but satisfaction also improved as they got older (2). After studying eleven to eighteen years old they found that body image satisfaction was at its highest at eighteen years of age…

From 1997 to 2005 there has been a 444% increase in plastic surgery. Therefore, 11.9 million Americans undergo plastic surgery each year, and out of that 11.9 million 335,000 are teenagers and 74,000 are under the age of eighteen! It seems like plastic surgery has become as easy as getting a haircut. Plastic surgery should not be readily available to the public like this because plastic surgery can be very dangerous, Americans take advantage of the procedures, and the surgery is not 100% guaranteed.…

All children rebel. And if you don’t believe this fact, then you’ve never raised a two year old. It’s called the ‘terrible twos’ for a reason, after all. The toddler wants to assert his own rights and does so by challenging authority. My niece, who I adore, does so at the top of her lungs. I can’t wait until she turns three. But I also wonder how she will begin to challenge authority later in life. How will she rebel when she is a teenager and she has access to money and a car? It makes me worry. Still, every person goes through puberty and most come through unscathed. But parents need to know why teenagers rebel and how they might rebel, in order to be prepared.…

The earthquake that hits Japan reminds me how fast things can change. The situation that Japan had to face now is just the same as Malaysia handling teenager’s issue. The Japan government has to spend around 48 billion to build up all the buildings that collapse due to the earthquake. At the same time, Malaysian government has to spend millions of money for teenagers recovery planned. Malaysian teenagers change their lifestyle as the world becoming more modern. Teenagers in 1940s are really different compare to teenagers in 21st century. They have attitude that as good as angel. They thought that education is everything. They do not have a lot of discipline issue since they want to study very hard to improve their family economy status. This situation is really different from teenagers today that have a lot of discipline issue. They think that study is not important and willing to do anything to satisfy their desire.…
