Purpose

To learn what are the main technical features of the Internet as a network of computers.

Networks
A network is a set of devices which can relate to each other and share resources.

Networks (II)
Internet is a broad, highly-distributed network of physical devices (computers, smartphones, tablets, etc) which can relate to each other in order to share contents and services.

Wikipedia?

A computer network, or simply a network, is a collection of computers and other hardware components interconnected by communication channels that allow sharing of resources and information. Internet is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies.

Networks (III)
To participate in a network some connection (communication) elements are needed: this is the hardware.

Networks (IV)
Some not-physical, logical elements are needed too: software applications which make this communication happen.
These software applications are of different kinds:


Network card drivers.



An Operating system in both connecting devices.



A communication protocol, or language which both connecting devices can speak. 7

Windows, Linux, MAC OS, Solaris, UNIX, etc.

Some people ask why should I need to set up a home network. There are several advantages to setting up a home network. Often you might want a file or program they've downloaded from the Net to be available to all of the computers at home.
