Teaching History Using Note Study
TEACHING USING NOTES – Note Study: Ngwenya Jonas This is a text based teaching method. It is an approach that integrates other teaching methods such as question and answer and pair / group work in it. For the child it is highly cognitive because it encourages meaningful problem solving and not drills and the learners actively participate in the learning process. Important things to consider when using the Note Study, 1. Sources 2. The role and value of the test 3. The advantages and disadvantages 4. Application 1. Sources ﴾ Sources such as text books, newspapers and magazines can be used The teacher can also make an authentic text 2. Values It motivates learners into activity which may facilitate learning skills through genuine communicative exchanges and responses. It concretises the teaching W It fosters mental development 3. Advantages Pupils retain memory; i.e. reading, writing and discussion is involved. It is child centered The teacher’s role is to guide pupils towards comprehension of the text and towards correct responses to the questions based on the text. 4. Disadvantages ﵽ Some children hate reading, e.g. comprehension ニ There are a variety of answers to questions  Some texts have limited information 5. Things to Consider When Selecting a Text  Completeness of the stretch of discourse  Length should not be too long 劉 Level of language difficulty 劉 Familiarity of subject matter ﶶ Whatever a genuine or authentic text would be used; TEACHING STRATEGY AND CLASS ACTIVITIES REFER TO APPENDIX THREE FOR THE TEXT. 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 - Inform the pupils that the day’s lesson would be based on a passage which they would read in order to make notes out of it 1.2 - Pre-reading activities; -Ask the pupils to name economic blocks or organizations that they know. 1.3 - Pupils outline the work of these blocks 2. BODY OF LESSON 2.1 DISTRIBUTION OF MATERIAL - The text has to be given to each pupil, in cases where there are too many pupils, pairs can be used - Pupils
