Changing our thinking about education

“Education should not be looked upon as the mere acquisition of academic subject matter, but as a part of life itself.” John Dewey

Providing quality education is perhaps the most significant contribution government can make to the people it serves. While we still know far less about the learning process than we would like, we should be willing to stand firmly behind those results of our experiences that show definite promise for success. In education, however, “success” is an illusive term. Whatever its ingredients, it must include advancement in the cognitive skills.

It is very difficult to say about quality, as it is a complex phenomenon and its definition is multi-dimensional (karmal, et al, 1985). These are no simple ingredients that can be prescribed to enhance quality under all situations and in any country. Quality is therefore a relative term and depends upon the situation and time in which the education system occurs. In Bhutanese context, the attainment of wholesome education is an indication of quality.

How we can improve teaching or education quality.
The rising/elevation of the quality of education is a great responsibility to be shared by the citizen of this kingdom of Bhutan in general and ministry of education in particular. Every one talks about quality of education, it has became the major issue for the people today. Pointing finger at the teachers. Infact it is not only the teacher’s product but there are many other factors like parents, curriculum, government plans and policies and student’s maturity and potential are responsible too.

Though there are many ways we can improve teaching or “raise” the quality of education, the three most important ways or factors, I feel, are as follows.
1. Our educational system should be incorporating the current knowledge how students learn, up to data cognitive theories and effective methodologies. As super memory helps students achieve distinctions and smart memory helps in every sphere of the life.
2. Most schools are unable to produce students who prepares for the 21st century because they are not taught to process information at the higher level of blooms taxonomy.
3. Methods of teaching in variety of ways and having them to demonstrate what they know through multiple measures of assessment must be emphasized at every level if we are to have all our students experience higher academic achievements.
