Tea Party And Occupy Case Study
These two cases then make up two dissimilar cases. Their ideology is quite different. The demographics within the two groups are also dissimilar, along with the important factor of age. Age is significant because it can be a predictor of the comfort an individual has with social media. One of the main differences between the groups is the focus on outcomes. While Occupy was primarily concerned with social change, the Tea Party was concerned with electoral outcomes. There are also some similarities between the groups. Both groups were founded based on financial concerns. Both groups were highly regionalized, with some areas featuring higher activity than others. These similarities, though are minimal compared to the differences between the groups. A multi-case study design is the method proposed to use for this study. A number of data sets will make up the majority of the quantitative analysis which examines how the groups utilized new media technology. In addition …show more content…
This dataset provides Twitter data as far back as 2008 and Facebook data as far back as 2009. Using this software I seek to examine tweets and Facebook posts related to both the Tea Party movement and the Occupy movement. The Tea Party data will come from the time period between February 1st 2009, and December 31st 2014. This represents the time frame two weeks before the first widely publicized national Tea Part protest and the most recent national election in which Tea Party supported candidates received high levels of support. The social media data on the Occupy movement will come from the time period consisting of March 1st 2011 and December 31st 2014. The first data represents ten days before the first major Wall Street protest, and the second was selected for the same reason as described above. This will be used in order to track popularity and attention for the movements on social media
