Taylor Swift Blank Space Analysis
I related the song “Blank space” by Taylor Swift to Mary Anne Bell because when she went to Vietnam to visit her boyfriend Mark Fossie, her appearance was “she had long white legs and blue eyes and a complexion like strawberry ice cream. Very friendly, too.”(93) and her first appearance tells us that she’s an innocent girl just by seeing that she has strawberry ice cream skin which symbolizes her innocence. After a few months, Mary Anne started going from an innocent girl to a girl “who is ready for the kill” and became one with Vietnam. “ ‘Cause darling I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream”(Blank Space by Taylor Swift) also describes Mary Anne because she looked so innocent but yet she was a “nightmare” she wore a necklace of human tongue,

Katrina Van Tassel’s playlist would have songs about how she's really fancy, how she's spoiled, and how she is beautiful. The first song that would be on her playlist would be “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea. The author says in the book, “ She was a blooming lass of eighteen peaches…” (33). She would have this song on her playlist because it says,” I'm so fancy, you already know”. Another song she would have on her playlist would be “barbie Girl” by Katy Perry because of how spoiled she is . Author Washington Irving says in the book, “...have been playing off any of her…” (80). She would have this song on her playlist because Katy Perry sings, ” you can brush my hair…”. The last song on her playlist would be, “Just the Way You Are”…

Significance: When looking at the entire platoon of men, it’s evident that this quote, which Rat was using to describe Mary Anne’s transformation over the course of her trip to Vietnam, is actually reflective the way all the men have been affected. All of the men came in as good old All-American boys. Through their months in the war, they were all changed to some degree. O’Brien shows characters such as his fictional self, who, though somewhat haunted by the war stories, has found ways to…

Anne Frank is someone who influenced history long after she was gone, because of her courage, bravery, and willpower that got here and her family through the tough times up until they were seized. Though Anne died at age fifteen in one of the camps, we still see her today as such an accepting human being throughout her life. In one of her very last entries Anne stated, “In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.” This entry proves her beliefs beyond measure that all humans are good people and mean for the best in their own lives. This statement alone expresses everything people need to know about Anne and who she was as a person this shows a maturity level way beyond her years as a young girl of only thirteen…

I enjoyed reading "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong" because I can relate with Mary Anne. There were two part of the chapter that caught my attention the most. The first was when the Rat was describing the changes in Mary's look. It doesn’t take long for someone to adapt to war, its not so much they want to its more that they need to. To survive someone must worry about what’s outside the walls and the soldiers you work with, not so much your personal preferences to hygiene or material possessions. The second part I liked was when she was talking to Fossie and describing how she truly feels about the country and the situation she has been put in. She describes how much she has learned about herself and how when she is out on mission she can feel her body working. War is like no other experience, your body is on a constant adrenaline rush and all your senses are heightened. It’s a feeling not many understand, nor want to but once you've had it you don’t want any less.…

“The guys sometimes liked to kid her...- but Mary Anne would just smile and stick out her tongue”(96). As a child, you would stick out your tongue to make fun of someone or use it as gesture towards someone who was making fun of you. In the beginning, when Mary Anne first arrives, she holds herself very immature. With the sticking out of her tongue she proves that she has the mentality of a child when she first arrives. She does this to avoid a confrontation of having to prove that she is not a native of the land and that she belongs there just like the rest of the men do. But then as the time goes on, you no longer see her sticking her tongue out like a child. She loses her “Bubbly” personality and her “Nervous giggling”(99). The once childlike acts that she was known for have been lost in the war. The men also would no longer kid around with her but would treat her as a soldier herself, and that was how she wanted to be treated.…

She had come for Mark, however she seemed more interested in Vietnam itself. When she first arrived, she was innocent and in love, “A tall big-boned blonde. At best, Rat said, she was seventeen years old, fresh out of Cleveland Heights Senior High. She had long white legs and blue eyes and a complexion like strawberry ice cream. Very friendly, too” (O’Brien, 89). You can see her arriving very friendly and innocent, like sweet ice cream with no imperfections. Rat later talking about how they had been sweethearts since the sixth grade and how they planned to have a beautiful family together. She seems like something out of a movie unknowing of what the war will do to her. She then gets a peek at what Vietnam is really like and starts to change into something unrecognizable, “A watched feeling- and a couple of times they almost saw her sliding through the shadows. Not quite, but almost. She had crossed to the other side. She was part of the land. She was wearing her culottes, her pink sweater, and a necklace of human tongues. She was dangerous. She was ready for the kill.” (O’Brien, 110). Although she looks very similar on the outside from the day she arrived, with her innocent outfit of culottes and a sweater, she has now become something of fear and a part of the shadows, the reader can almost feel her watching from behind. Nobody had known where she had gone, but her innocence was lost after seeing what happened in Vietnam with all of the fighting. Not only did Mary Anne change, but her boyfriend, Mark, was lost without her and she had an impact on the platoon after disappearing into the forest. After being brought into the conflict a sweet, innocent, girl has been changed into a hunter of the…

But, like the other pieces of sheet music during this era, by using a black woman as the central figure for this composition, both the lyrics and cover illustrations propagate the racist attitudes of the white, upper class audience. Not only do the lyrics in the song keep the African American woman in check in accordance to her gender roles, but also her race. The line “She called herself the Blackville vampire” draws a line between the free-spirited white woman that the composer is trying to embody for appeal and the African American woman that she is in the reality of society. The cover art for this sheet music also promotes racism by depicting a male and a female clearly in blackface, an insulting gesture mocking African…

Having a rather hard childhood, being dirt poor, having too work as a maid at a young age, always feeling alone, Anne grew up rather fast. In a sense, she didn’t really have a childhood and could have easily blamed life for all her troubles and making nothing of her life but she instead did the complete opposite. Moody instead made the decision to not feel sorry for herself but to make something out of herself and be the change she wanted to see. After reaching this point we saw Anne blossom into a beautiful,, smart, radiant, strong young adult. She was her own person, aspiring others around her including her peers along with the adults that surrounded her. Being a straight A student, Homecoming queen, star basketball player, Anne graduates from high school and goes to college on a full ride scholarship. Anne soon realizes, as the movement must realize, that the future of the movement is in the youth, and the movement must focus on practical affairs. Symbolically, she…

Annemarie is one of Miranda’s good friends other than Sal. They became close during the school year and constantly hang out. They also start working at the sandwich place nearby during lunch times. Annemarie got mad at Miranda one day when they were working at the sandwich place because Jimmy, the owner, made what seemed like a racist joke about Julia, one of Annemarie’s best friends who is dark skinned. He quoted what Miranda had said, which made Annemarie think she was the racist one. Miranda did not mean for the joke to be racist but Annemarie did not understand. “Jimmy pointed his big finger right at me. ‘Like you call her, Swiss Miss: Hot chocolate.’ ” (page 129) Jimmy clearly took the nickname as a racist joke but really Miranda made up the nickname to imply that Julia is always talking about the watch and chocolate she got from Switzerland. One morning on Christmas Break, Miranda walks to Annemarie’s house and she welcomes her in. They talk about their argument and Annemarie believed Miranda on what the joke was supposed to mean. “So, about what happened at Jimmy’s... ,” I said. ‘You know, I really never meant… what he thought I meant. Not for one second.” Miranda described to Annemarie at her house that day. To summarize, Annemarie is another important relationship in the…

“Mean” by Taylor Swift is the song that best fits the conflict of “All Summer in a Day” because it shows that the children were disrespectful to Margot. Margot’s peers never believed her knowledge about the sun and did not respect that she was different hence why they were rude to her. The Author writes “What’re you looking at? Margot said nothing. Speak when your spoken to. He gave her a shove. But she did not move.” (Bradbury 2) William, one of Margot’s classmates, was bullying Margot both physically and emotionally. For instance, in this statement William pushes and critiques her. “Mean” portrays the exact manner that the children had concerning Margot.…

Lieder ohne Worte (Song without Words) is written by the Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. It is a collection of forty-eight short lyrical piano pieces of markedly song-like character that he wrote at various periods of his life between 1809 and 1847. They are well suited to the study of musical form because of their artistic value. Op. 19b, No. 1 Andante con moto in E major was written in 1830 and is the first in the collection. The piece is in the key of E major and modulates from E to B to G major.…
