1) What are the ethical issues in this case? I don’t think there are any ethical issues from the company in this case. They are concerned with recycling, reducing energy output and emissions. There core values are first before profit.

2) What keeps other companies from having the commitment to environmental sustainability that NBB has evidenced? Cost is the biggest driver when companies don’t want to commit to environmental sustainability. For most company’s it comes down to the bottom line with cash. If they have to use some of their profits to go environmental they wont. They don’t have the ethics on putting this first above profits like NBB. That is why so you third world dumping waste everywhere and not recycling.

3) Are you more likely to purchase a product from a company with a strong commitment to sustainability? Yes I would. If I know they are being ethical and looking at the future of natural resources I would. Next time I go to buy beer I will probably get Fat tire.

4) The environmental sustainability benefits of cans over bottles are well established. Should NBB make a greater commitment to cans even if it means forgoing the distinctive aspects of its bottles and the potential loss of craft beer status in customers’ perceptions? I think they should try and see what customers think. But if the cans aren’t there then go to bottles and try to make them more environmentally sustainable.

5) Are New Belgium Brewing’s Core Values and Beliefs sustainable? Or, will the company be forced by competition to revert to many of the traditional practices of other brewers? I would say it’s sustainable. They have been doing great for many years. As the years go on and with regulations more companies are going to have to take on NBB practices or be forced to be shutdown by the government.

In 1985 the Coors Brewing Company experienced such changes from a lack of a specific industry analysis and strategy for the future that simultaneously would have allowed for flexibility. The lowered stock price and their financial information show operational issues are happening; the numbers don’t lie and investors will continue to react negatively to Coors unless their problems are mitigated. To develop a competitive advantage, a company must have superior resources and capabilities…

Company X does not currently have any environmental initiatives. There are a few I would readily recommend, going paperless, turning off our computers before leaving, and allowing more telecommuting. Each one of these can help protect the environment by reducing pollution in one manner or another. These are all small changes that could have a big impact. With a company size approaching 150 employees we can generate quite a bit of pollution just in our day to day activities without knowing we did so.…

    New Belgium Brewing:

New Belgium addresses several environmental issues, the first being air pollution. In an effort to “do their part,” they switched from coal burning power to wind power. NBB were the first brewing company to a make such a bold move. The change to wind power has allowed NBB to reduce CO2 emissions by 1,800 metric tons each year. Another environmental issue addressed by NBB is the reduction of energy costs. To this end, NBB reuses the hot water used to boil its hops and barley. This water is used to provide heat to flooring and loading docks. The hops and barley used in the brewing process do not go to waste either: they are stored and offered “free of charge” to local live stock farmers to be used as feed. This not only benefits the environment, it adds a sort of feed subsidy to the local farmers thereby helping them lower their feed costs. This can be shown as both an environmental and social benefit to the community. In addition to the environmental items above, NBB also uses sun tubes to provide natural lighting to the plant, again cutting down on energy costs. Finally, and perhaps the most unconventional, NBB offers each employee, after one year of employment, a bike that can be ridden to work. The last seems more of show of good effort than a true environmental savings.…

While not in the mission statement I think that the environmental page speaks wonders as to the type of company that we are describing. The funny thing I notice about companies that tout their green status is that typically the things they tout are actually cost saving policies with the added benefit of being “good” for the environment. I personally feel that that applies to this situation as well mostly but I can’t blame them because ultimately the cost is what will decide on what actions get taken but they seem to at least consider the environment and not just the cost benefit (Environmental, 2015).…

A number of researches indicate that people now pay more attention to environmental issues. Over the past few years, more consumers have realized that their buying behavior somehow have direct effects on many environment problems. People’s realization stimulates the demand of eco-friendly products. In 1989, 67% of Americans were willing to pay more by about 10% for eco-friendly products (Coddington, 1990). But things have changed in only five years. Myburgh-Louw and O’Shaughnessy (1994) found that 79% of their research sample (UK female consumers) consented to pay up to 40% more for green products.…
