Tale Of Kieu Essay
I chose The Tale of Kiều book written by Nguyễn Du and translated and annotated by Huynh Sanh Thong to do my book review. The Tale of Kiều is considered to be the most important piece of Vietnamese literature, especially poetry, because of its insight into Vietnamese culture, including social ideals and religious values. The Tale of Kiều is a story about of a young, beautiful, and talented Vietnamese lady named Thuy Kieu, who endures hardships after hardships in her life due to her fate and karma. Kieu was born into a well-educated family and loved a young scholar named Kim Trong. Then disaster struck her family when her father and brother were falsely accused and imprisoned by the local mandarin. In order to save them, Kieu decided to sell herself to Scholar Ma Giam …show more content…
Thus, she couldn’t be with her lover Trong and hereafter her bad karma begins. Moreover, Kieu came to know that Scholar Sinh was a pimp and sold her into prostitution. Later, Kieu was sold out of the brothel when a young merchant, Thuc Sinh, bought her and took her to his house. However, Thuc Sinh’s wife, Hoan Thu, is infuriated and jealous of Kieu. Then, Hoan Thu planned to force Kieu in slavery by being kidnapped by Thu’s henchman. Kieu couldn’t bear anymore of Thu’s tortures and decided to run away. She was later accepted and became a nun in a Buddhist temple with the help of nun Giac Duyen. But later was kicked out of the temple when they came to know that she stole two candlesticks from her previous place. Nevertheless, she was sold into prostitution again when she was tricked by a family of pious believers who promised her to give shelter. Later, she met a revolutionary leader named Tu Hai and got

The book I chose this week is called "Tjatjakaymatchan (Coyote) A legend from Carmel Valley" by Alex O. Ramirez and is a Native American tale about why the coyote calls into the night. I would categorize this book as fiction because of the talking coyote and fox. I decided to read this book because of my Choctaw heritage and it reminded me that many first people languages and stories are vanishing into the time because they not written down most of the time. The most interesting piece of information that I found was about why this book was published and it was because the writer's friends encouraged him to write down his memories of his Elders so that they would not fade into time. I also thought his illustrations were interesting because unlike…

In the novel, Paradise of the Blind, written by Duong Thu Huong originally in Vietnamese and translated into English by Phan Huy Duong and Nina Mcpherson, the author constructs characters Aunt Tam and Uncle Chinh as analogs of conflicting political ideologies of 20th century Vietnam in order to display her opinions on its effectiveness in attaining proclaimed paradise. The characters are constructed to differently express the author’s voice towards extremist ideologies, Uncle Chinh representing the communist ideology, and Aunt Tam representing the capitalist ideologies.…

Huong uses careful diction to portray the perspective of Hang as she travels through her journey and comes to her own realizations. Huong writes, “I understood something, perhaps for the first time: In every life, there must come a moment when what is most sacred, most noble, in us evaporates into thin air. In a flash of lucidity, the values we have honored and cherished reveal themselves in all their poverty and vulgarity, as they had to this girl. From this moment, no one is spared. (Huong 85)” In this quote Hang comes to a crucial moment in her life where she realizes the other side of her culture, the…

The character I have chosen from Alice Walker's novel, 'Everyday Use,' is Mama. Mama is a single parent raising two daughters. Mama describes herself as a “large, big-boned woman with rough, man-working hands. She proudly tells of her ability to kill and clean hogs as “mercilessly” as any man. I believe these skills were acquired out of sheer survival and necessity. Mama starts the story recalling the dreams she often has in which she and Dee reunite on a television talk show. In this dream she has described herself almost as if it is the woman that she wished she was for example she states she is “a hundred pounds lighter, her skin like an uncooked barley pancake.” Although she says the way she looks in the dream is the way her daughter would want her to be, I think she longs for that as well.…

How was tour understanding of the cultural and contextual considerations of the work developed through the interactive oral? 'Paradise of the Blind' is a novel my vietnamese author 'Duong Thu Huong'. It is a very controversial novel as it highlight sensitive social issues about Vietnam. It is the first novel that gives us a vivid image of the sociological change that was taking place in Vietnam in that time period. The interactive oral was really helpful to me as it allowed me to understand the motifs, issues and culture better. The most important issue according to me is the society shown in the novel. It is both beautiful and cruel. It is strikingly sexist. It is favorable to the men, and unfair to the women, who are considered to be lesser beings. This is seen through the relationship between Que and Chinh. Que sacrifices her daughter's happiness to fulfill the needs and wants of Chinh and his family. She does this as Chinh is the man of the family-the heir, and so she believes she is lower to him, and is selfless. Chinh on the other hand is selfish, does not seem to care about his sister, he ruins her marriage, and is consequently…

Honglou meng is a book which consumed the whole life of Cao xue qing. It is believed that the novel is semi-autobiographical, mirroring the fortunes of Cao Xueqin's own family. It was intended to be a memorial to the women Cao knew in his youth: friends, relatives, and servants, as the author details in the first chapter. The novel itself is a detailed, episodic record of the lives of the extended Jia Clan, made up of two branches, the Ning-guo and Rong-guo houses, which occupies two large adjacent family compounds in the Qing capital, [Beijing]. Their ancestors were made Dukes, and at the novel's start the two houses were still one of the most illustrious families in the capital. It can be obviously seen that the subject content of this novel is not easy to understand but contains profound meanings. As Lu Xun said it will be had various understanding of Honglou meng by various persons¡¯ eyes. It is clear that the three most outstanding qualities as literature of Honglou meng which is the structure, the characters and the literature technique should not be…

From a very young age, I can remember sitting at the kitchen counter with my older sisters as my mother was telling us all of the things we needed to do to be upstanding and healthy young adults. As we grew up, she continued to preach to us because she didn’t want us to grow up to be misfits. Some adults believe teenagers eat too much junk food, live without principles and never think about the consequences of their actions. As a seventeen year old, I will admit that I’m the complete opposite of the typical teenager because I eat healthy, I am conscientious and I always obey the law.…

Do you ever wonder if the resources we depend on today, such as oil and coal, will someday run out? In eighth grade I took a field trip to a wind farm in Minnesota and learned a lot about the wind turbines and how they are a renewable energy source. We had been learning about fossil fuels and alternative energy sources in Earth Science class. The trip made me realize that someday we may run out of fossil fuels and society needs to utilize renewable energy sources. As a result of that trip, I try to stay informed on solar energy and wind energy, so I can someday harness my own renewable energy and become less dependent on oil and coal.…
