Tabasco Dose Report
After initially reading about the Tabasco sauce intervention I was kind of shocked. This seemed to be very unethical at first. However after they furthered explained the purpose of the intervention and highlighted the helpful effects of the intervention my opinioned changed. Though I would want to explore a more effective way that doesn’t make question is this technique unethical. At first I thought they were just spraying tabasco sauce into Sam mouth, which seemed very unethical because given his age this could cause him extreme discomfort. The book highlighted that “whenever Sam began to scream a mixture of water and Tabasco sauce was squirted into his mouth” (Oltmanns, Martin, & Neale, 2014). Once I realized that it was mixed with water

Sulfa drugs are any member of a group of synthetic antibiotics containing the sulfanilamide molecular structure (Figure 1). Sulfa drugs were the first class of antibiotics to treat and prevent bacterial infection in humans. Sulfa drugs have been used less frequently due to improved antibiotics that are more effective, have less side effects, and decreased drug resistance.1, 2 Sulfonamides are still used today as an anti-bacterial medication and for the prevention of burns. The antibacterial effects of sulfonamides were first observed in 1932 by German bacteriologist and pathologist Gerhard Domagk. Domagk studied the effects of red dye Prontosil (Figure 1) on Streptococcus infection in mice by using competitive inhibition to stop the production of the bacteria of which, the…

The objective of this lab was to consult for the FDA regarding a recently surfaced scandal involving false reporting of iron content in cereal as well as iron tablets. The makers of the cereal and the iron tablets, respectively, were allegedly reporting higher amounts of iron in their products than actually existed, as a way to save money but continue to provide products with “adequate” amounts of iron. The FDA needed consulting in order to analyze the products and use the data to determine the true amount of iron in each product, as well as confirm that the iron was usable by the human body. The methods used to analyze the products, data, and results will be provided in the sections below.…

    Lima Bean Lab Report

Lima beans are edible flat whitish beans and are good to use for any experiment because they represent the human body in that they both go through all of the same processes of growth and development. This lab uses lima beans in order to determine whether they were viable or not. If a bean is viable, it means that it is alive: able to grow and develop. The two ways to find out whether a bean is viable or not, are a tetrazolium test and germination test. Tetrazolium is a chemical that turns red in the presence of hydrogen ions. All living organisms release hydrogen ions every day and therefore, it was possible to see whether the lima beans were viable or not using tetrazolium. This is a result…

At one point in everyone’s lives they have to organize something whether it is being a party, preparing food, or cleaning a house. I personally love to prepare food, but I only do for special occasions such as for Thanksgiving, Christmas, 4th of July, or for someone birthday. I can make a variety of dishes that vary from a full course steak meal all the way to deserts. My favorite meal to prepare is jalapeño poppers. Jalapeño poppers are easy to make and they do not involve a bunch of complex steps like other meals I prepare. I began to make jalapeño poppers with my mom about eight to nine years ago when I was eight to seven years old. In the beginning the jalapeño poppers were plain, but they have improved over time.…
