It is supposed to stop an engine from starting without the transponder being near the vehicle. Fake frequency modulation (FM) transmitters broadcasting radio data system traffic message channel (RDS-TMC) information adversely influencing the navigation system in cars have been attacked.

Tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) also employ RF protocols to send pressure sensor information from within the tyre to an engine control units (ECU) in the vehicle. These protocols have been sniffed and spoofed to fool the ECU into reporting a false tyre-pressure warning to the driver. An attack on the system at the right time could have safety consequences by distracting or alarming the driver.
The need for smarter cars

Smart cars are still developing towards reliable means of communication. With vehicles, even a minuscule chance of error could lead to major disasters. Human involvement in driving provides for swift action being taken in real time. Autonomous vehicles leave a lot of open areas for question. A smart vehicle runs on algorithms, which is to create a parallel to the human mind. However, unlike the human mind, any number of problems can lead to disaster.     Firstly, autonomous vehicle control can increase the flow of traffic and make transportation far more efficient.[2] While few fully autonomous vehicles have actually been utilized and tested in the real world, it is a known fact that they have the potential to increase the safety and productivity of the road. The elimination of bottlenecking and traffic as a whole can enable cities to repurpose land previously used for multilane highways or roads. This would change the urban landscape entirely, and allow for more nature friendly parks and recreation centers to be constructed. However, self driving technology is also met with significant skepticism as moral and safety issues arise. The potential for fatal car accidents and detrimental injuries isn’t too uncommon for the self driving car because often it’s sensors aren’t precise enough to accurately identify or measure a given obstacle.[3] Of course, as one could predict, pushing 70mph on a highway and running head first into a tree doesn’t exactly have a positive outlook for those involved. Also, there is an aspect of losing blue collar jobs as computers begin to replace them. The trucking industry is worth nearly $700-billion , and one third of that money goes to paying for the drivers, meaning that replacing them using computers would be economically ideal for participating businesses.[4] Nearly 1.7 million blue collar truck drivers have the potential to lose their jobs because of the implementation of self driving…

    We see this technology evolving at a fast pace with fierce competition amongst many big-name companies. Many are researching and implementing the latest technology or submitting a patent for that design. Technology is great for society but with safety in mind that must be the main priority. Personal safety is one of the main uncertainties when it comes down to employing self-driving vehicles on our roadways. The potential for injuries that will be talked about are whiplash, concussions and other injuries from vehicle accidents. Once the safety measures are in place and functions as intended we will start to see companies using these vehicles to help with cost saving measures.
