Synapsis of You'Ve Got Mail
You've Got Mail is based on the 1940 movie Shop Around The Corner, except it's an electronic update. The plot is funny with some element of romanticism. Joe Fox of Fox Books opens up a book superstore in Manhattan Upper East Side. Joe is untroubled that his bookstore is driving out smaller bookstores. Kathleen Kelly, an owner of a smaller bookstore, Shop Around The Corner, declares war on Joe and his cruel antics. What Joe and Kathleen don't know is they've been secretly talking to each other via the Internet. They met at a party and became natural enemies. While chatting one night, Joe gives Kathleen the courage to stand up for herself and be more aggressive. The two unknowingly agree to meet at a bar for a blind date. Late that night, Kathleen turns quite mean to Joe, whom she thinks stopped by to bother her. Joe soon learns the identity of his anonymous friend. He also finds himself attracted to Kathleen in real life and the cyber world. Joe wonders how he can fix the situation he is in; NY152 (Joe) loves Shopgirl (Kathleen), but in real life Kathleen can't stand Joe. The end is bittersweet because Joe reconciles with Kathleen and then NY152 and Shopgirl meet in real life. Kathleen was surprised at first, but she realizes she loves Joe also. The voice-over mainly happens when the two talk on-line. When either one types to each other, you hear them consciously saying their conversation. The voice-over adds some definition to the whole idea of them talking on-line. Since they can't talk to each other in person, the voice-overs make the conversations complete. In addition, the way Meg Ryan says her conversations in the sweetest way or even the way Tom Hanks describes The Godfather in his fake manly voice adds to the charm. The director Nora Ephron is critically acclaimed for writing Sleepless In Seattle and When Harry Met Sally. She matches Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan together to score this sweet romantic comedy. The movie has many themes revolving

    When Harry Met Sall

‘When Harry Met Sally’ is a romantic comedy set from the mid 1970’s to the mid-to-late 1980’s. From the beginning the film seemed like the perfect example from Mark Knapp’s 10 stages of relational development. There was a plethora of talking and Harry was quite witty while Sally was very sweet and up-beat. As a personal opinion, at first the film seemed to be slightly boring plot-wise – a man and a woman meet to travel a ways to the city? Sounds like the perfect situation to ‘fall in love’ in and have a happily ever-after. Though, as more of the movie was watched, it became more interesting and less of an assignment requirement.…

Where it is changed it is usually to make to story clearer, for example, the added line of Pappi saying “You and Mikey used to sing that song.” The removal of Troy’s line at the end of the scene where we find out Jean is pregnant increases the impact of this reveal and therefore helps the story the brothers are trying to tell. In terms of the dialogue, the brothers have used comeback zingers (e.g. “Well - I’m sorry, which? Out, or fuck you?”), push button dialogue (e.g. “Do you...plug yourself in somewhere?”), repetition (e.g. “I have to run the elevator.”), sarcasm (e.g. “He’s great. Good to see what I have to look forward to.”) and other techniques. Each character’s dialogue is only longer than two lines when necessary (e.g. with Jean or Roland) and every word is used effectively. The whole film, in a way, is a set-up itself, only to be payed off when we realise the end is the beginning and the significance of this. Where they break the rules, using past tense, including camera…

You Can’t Take it With You did not have many similarities to Death of a Salesman, from what I could see. A wealthy man (Tony Kirby) and a woman (Alice Sycamore) from a very eccentric household fall in love and his family disapproves. Perhaps it could be similar in how Mr. Kirby disapproves of his son marrying Alice because of her family/background, and Mr. Loman disapproves of his son Biff because of his failure in the business…

Pillow Talk (1959), starring Doris Day and Rock Hudson, and Annie Hall (1977), starring Woody Allen and Diane Keaton, are two very different films that both belong to the genre of romantic comedy. Both films received five Oscar nominations. Pillow Talk was nominated for best actress, best supporting actress, musical score, art direction, and the one which it won, best story and screenplay written directly for the screen (Kimmel, 2008, p. 124). Annie Hall was nominated for best picture, best director, best original screenplay, best actor, and best actress. It was the first time, since Orson Wells in 1941, that the same person, Woody Allen, was nominated for writing, directing, and starring in a film (Kimmel, 2008, p.171). It won four of the five Oscars, only losing out on best actor. Pillow Talk is a film that provides a dated, silly interpretation of the development of a romantic relationship, especially because of its formulaic approach to the subject, whereas Annie Hall provides a more timeless, realistic view of romantic relationships, possibly because its time period provided a much more radical formula for this genre. A comparison of the two films analyzing their historical contexts, settings, visual characteristics, music, and the different ways that they achieve their “happy endings” will show why Pillow Talk only works in 1959 but Annie Hall is a romantic comedy that is still enjoyable today.…
