Synagogue Site Visit
Synagogue Site Visit For my site visit I had stumbled upon Congregation Beth Shalom, a Conservative Jewish synagogue located in downtown Atlanta. Some services Beth Shalom offers are a Jewish educational experience for children from pre-k to 7th grade, as well as teaching adults Hebrew, and how to chant. I was told that the starting Saturday service begins at approximately 9:30am and ends at 12:30pm. The first thing I noticed upon arriving at about 9:26am was that there were about 4 cars parked in the lot, which I found to be interesting as I was expecting a crowd. As I proceeded to enter the synagogue, I noticed the large Star of David mounted atop the building which I later found out to be the main room in which the Rabbi spoke. When I entered the synagogue there was a small gathering of people around a table which I made my way to. The first gentleman who stepped out to greet me was Rabbi Mark Zimmerman; he welcomed me and told me I was more than welcome to observe the service. Rabbi Zimmerman explained to me that the first hour would be leyn, or chanting in Hebrew, and the actual service that was in English would not begin until approximately 10:30am. The Rabbi also explained that Conservative Judaism is going to involve a bit more Hebrew, but not quite as much as Orthodox Judaism. Another woman explained to me that men and women aren’t allowed to sit with each other in Orthodox Judaism. The synagogue also had the Hebrew translation sitting under nearly every English word in the building. The walls were also lined with display cases that contained items of holiday importance such as Dreidels and Menorahs for Hanukah. The synagogue auditorium particularly had a very large scroll in Hebrew that came from Europe many years ago, a reminder of the Jewish heritage.
I was informed to wear ‘casual business apparel’ and attempted to dress the part, so I wore khakis and a button down shirt. Little had I known that most of the men at this particular service would be

The Seventh Day adventists began in 1863 and they try not to eat much meat because of what the bible says about meat causing some to be vegetarian (Sanchez, Gelabert, Bobadilla, Del Valle). When I walked into their church some said “Happy Saturday” to me. Their place of worship felt comfortable and approachable it was painted a nice white color with a high altar and they were benches with books of the songs and copies of the bible. The pastor came to greet me and during the service he announced how happy they were that they had a visitor and everyone welcomed me out…

For my field trip to another religion’s worship service, I chose to visit the Beth El Congregation Synagogue in Baltimore, Maryland. I have family members that are a part of the Jewish community, but I had never attended service with them until this experience. The Bel El Congregation is a progressive synagogue that is affiliated with United Synagogue. I arrived early to see if I could find someone to show me around so I felt more acquainted with the happenings around me. Lucky for me, there was a kind woman who acted as the synagogue’s receptionist for this particular Friday. She was nice enough to to give me a short tour as well as a little information on synagogues before the service started.…

On October 31, 2015, I attended serves at a synagogue in Tucson, Az. The synagogue was not all that special, not like churches with the tall bell towers and huge cathedral area. The synagogue was small, with one set of windows on the other side cross from the entrance and the chairs were in a circle around the alter. For the service the men have to were head coverings, but the head covering were different colors, I do wonder if the color has and meaning to the person who’s wearing the covering. I wish I had gone to a popular service so I could have seen more interactions with people of different ages. I know that in a church service you can’t go up for communion unless you have make you first communion, I wonder does that apply to a synagogue…

Also, clothing is a huge part of ones identity since people are defined who they are by what they wear. Normally, people would not think a man in suit and tie could be a mugger, killer or rapist. In page 117, paragraph 8, Staples said he had a very bad experience. He get into a office building in rush to turn in a deadline story to his editor and the security thought he is a burglar since he did not wear suit and tie, instead, he wore T-shirt and jeans. Personally, I had a very similar experience about clothing. I have two different jobs, one in office and one delivering pizza. One day, right after I got off from my office and then I went to delivery pizza. Since I didn't change my nice cloth, three black guys thought I was rich and robbed me with a gun. I was so scared to dead and I swore I wouldn't wear any nice cloth if I have to walk at night and special in west…

Overall, the interior of the synagogue reminded me very much of a church. The sanctuary was round or possibly octagonal, with the seating also set up in a semicircle. Inside of the sanctuary the atmosphere was different from that in the lobby, more serious I would say. I thought that it was lovely, and smaller than the chapel of any church I’ve ever attended. We were given prayer books as we entered, and when I leafed through mine I found that it was printed from…

I went to The Kesher Israel which is a modern orthodox Synagogue in Georgetown on November 15th to attend their 7:00 p.m. Thursday service which is considered Maariv because it was an afternoon service. The inside of the Synagogue looked very old fashion and somewhat like a regular Baptist church of I would attend but with a few differences. There were 12 rows of pews going forward and in the middle was I was sort of area which look like a pool pit which I found out was called a Bimah and that is were a person reads the Torah out loud to the audience. The Torah is the Jewish bible, which consists of 5 books of the old testaments, which is Genesis Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. There were only seven people when I came in but they were friendly even though they seemed curious why I was there. When I told them I am just visiting for my class assignment, they seemed understanding and were pleased to answer my questions. Ellen Epstein was the lady assign to help me with any questions I might have. As soon as I start writing, a lady said she knew it is going to happen so she was waiting to tell me but nobody can write in the Synagogue but memorize what they see and talk about. She even invited me to have a sweet wine and bread with them. After the service, people went to a social room and had conversations. I asked a guy if the bread and wine have certain meaning having Jesus giving out bread and wine to represent his body and blood but they were not related.…

I attended an Atlanta Mar Thoma Indian Church service and a social fellowship honoring Senior citizens. The church service started at 10 am. When I arrived to the parking lot, I introduced myself to a young lady by the same of Sarah who was cordial enough to answer all of my questions concerning the service and invited me to the fellowship later. The service lasted for 3 hours. I noticed their central theme throughout the service was unity and harmony. They also followed a central pattern of call and response. The preacher would make a statement and the congregation would respond by reading the appropriate response on overhead screen. A lot of the recitations included asking God for forgiveness for their sins. They also had prayer and communion.…

I chose to attend a Catholic Mass service at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. I selected this type of experience because I have never attended a Catholic service. I am an African-American female and I was raised in the Baptist faith. In my community there are very few Black people of the Catholic faith; therefore contacting a friend to attend the service with was impossible. I attended the service on a Monday. The service started at noon. The congregation was predominantly white. The African-Americans I saw were very few in number. Since I am a very open person I was really excited to attend the service. My family on my mother’s side are mostly Seventh - day Adventist and I was taught several ideas about the Catholic Church.…

Over a month ago when I selected the topic of Judaism as the subject for my field research paper, I thought that the outcome would be cut and dry. I knew that Judaism served as the foundation for my own faith (Christianity) and that Jews honored the Sabbath from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. I also had in my mind the imagery of the Star of David, the Torah scroll and the male rabbi in the synagogue donning a prayer shawl over his shoulders and a kippah on the crown of his head. I believed that I had the general concepts of the Jewish faith in my mind; I just needed to witness a virtual worship service and fill in some of the minor details while gathering some additional intelligence on some misconceptions.…
